My New Fish

  1. I bought him thursday and I'm falling in love with him. He's one intelligent oscar, it's crazy. He gets excited whenever I get home from work and he goes absolutely nuts when I shake his bag of frozen bloodworms, he's like a dog. he also lets me touch his head when I reach my hand in his tank. He's going to be a very enjoyable pet. Discuss fish and how great they are. Here is a picture of him. His name is Ozzy.

  4. Cool, I'm glad you enjoy your new fish. Let me ask you a few questions as I am a fish keeper also and perhaps my knowledge of fish might help you out.

What size is your tank? What kind of filter? Tank mates? Food? How often do you do water changes?

When I first began my fish hobby, My first fish was the oscar, because it was begging for food at the petstore I just had to have it. Well, oscars are very messy eaters, they often only eat half the food they stuff in their mouths and the other half pops out their gills. They grow very fast, an adult oscar will require a tank at least 150 gallon to live a happy life (sure you can raise it in a tiny tank, but do you really want to do that to your fish? If you do not care for the fish's well being, put him in any tank size you prefer). Oscars are not very aggressive for being cichlid fish, but will pick on fish less aggressive than itself. Oscars are prone to diseases (mainly due to the oscar dirtying up the water, as it produces alot of waste), such as HITH (hole in the head) you will see tiny holes on the head and face area. Other than that, happy fish keeping.

I've kept 100's of different species of fish in my lifetime and I'd say that most fish are interesting in their own way, and how they developed special skill over evolution. My favorite fish are probally snakeheads (felony in USofA, so I don't keep felony fish anymore). Least favorite are some catfish, piranhas (insanely overrated), and mosy hybrid fish (such as parrots, flowerhorns, angels).

There are many fish forums just like this place, monsterfishkeepers.com, waterwolves.com, and some more I can't think of.

  5. I tank I have right now is fairly small, I plan on getting him a much larger one very soon. I also have a algae eater in the tank and that's it, he likes to fuk with him too. Right now I'm feading him frozen blood worm larvaes, he seems to like them despite his messiness, i also feed him smaller fish like rosies.

  6. Hmm I recommend you get some Hikari cichlid pellets for everyday feeding, use the worms for every other day feedings, and stay off feeders, feeders often carry parasites unnoticable by examination. Once a week is fine. Try to include a wide variety of foods, this brings out good coloration of your fish, un cooked shrimp (no shell) is very good for color, but too much will clog the intestines and kill your fish. If you have any questions, just ask, I'm here to answer what I can.

  7. I've got a 5 acre pond that I dumped a bag of those little "feeder" goldfish in. Ten years ago. Now they are enormous Koi type creatures.
