My first grow!

OK, after some difficulty acquiring seeds, and then after mold attacked my seeds, i am finally starting.

Somehow mold attacked my seeds inside my ziploc bag which was underneath a towel. I didnt have any bleach, but i did have Hydrogen Peroxide. I said what the hell, it couldnt hurt, i mixed in about 1.5 capfulls of H202 with about a cup of water, and let them sit overnight. To my surprise , 5 of them had germinated. It seems the H202 provides the seeds with just enough oxygen (the bubbles stick to the seeds for some reason) to prevent them from "drowning."

I planted the 5 and I put the rest of the seeds in a fresh solution. This morning, I awake to find that not only did MORE germinate. One had completely busted out and i could see the cotlyedons! So i am on my way!

My grow box is finally finished. It's a 44 x 44 x 44in box. I put two coats of flat white paint on the inside. I caulked all the edges and corners. I turned on the lights outside and got inside the box. I couldnt see my hand in front of my face!

ok ok, it's not completely finished. I have to cut holes for the HPS lights and also for the ventilation, but i cant do that until i get my lights.

So now, I'm waiting on my lights!

LoL! Lights have been ordered and should arrive within a week. I'll be extremely pissed if they dont. I ordered from Hippie John's site econolight.com. Nice N cheap!

Just a small update for ya, I've got 16 seeds that have germinated and are in peat pots right now. I checked them after class today and one has sprouted!!!

Yippee! lol

 

Quick Update:

3 more have sprouted and the 1st one has died. The 1st one died because I let it dry out. Dumb dumb-dumb dumb.

I went ahead and bought nutes, rooting hormones, and a humidity dome today. The new sprouts are now inside the humidity dome, so NO drying out for them.
My 150W HPS has arrived and is installed. I'm waiting on my sheet metal guys now to finish my air duct for my "bathroom." Once i get this, i can construct my intake/exhaust system.

The humidity dome- I bought this from the local gardening center and its basically a plastic 2 piece box. The top is clear and the bottom (black) has small "irrigation canals." At least thats what I'll call them.
I've got 3 sprouts in there, temp approx 82 degrees & humidity 60%. My two flouros (which burned my 1st sprout to death) are sitting directly on top of the dome. This leaves about 1.5 inches between the top of the stretched sprout and the lights. I've noticed since yesterday, the sprout has gotten much greener.

*closes eyes and crosses fingers and JUMPS* So i am really growing now! Who knew it could be so much fun!

2 more sprouted this morning, i now have 8!

 

2 more sprouted, so that's 10. Doesnt look to hopeful for the other 10. I'm going to keep trying, but it's been near a week in the soil.

My box is FINALLY done. The fan is installed, the box has the HPS at the top, and my sprouts are doing great. The fan i got is great. It's a Lowe's bathroom vent fan 70CFM for ($30). It's pretty quiet too.

I have secondarys growing off a few sprouts!
Tomorrow i get my DigiCam and I'm very excited. Pix tomorrow!

You'll have to forgive the bluriness of some of these pix. I just got my cam today and i'm still getting accustomed to it!

The exhaust port closes when the fan is off and opens when it turns on! Great little feature for unwanted air/light intrusions.

One sidenote: In the 2nd pic post the Hygrometer shows 2 temps. The 2nd temp is the temp inside the growbox. The 1st temp is the temp inside the shed. The humidity is the humidity inside the humidity dome where the sprouts are.
The dogs would never hurt anyone, but they bark so damn loud at anyone who comes near the house that it would keep unwanted visitors away.

 

Thaks a bunch Killa Cam. The Digital Walmart thing was cheap. Under 10 if i remember correct. Ya, and the dogs are man-eaters, right? lol
