Okay, i am an absolute beginner in need of some help, feedback, and ideas. I don't have a green thumb, so I will definately be needing some tips. I just germinated a bagseed that I had been saving in a tupperware container for a few weeks. I made a grow room out of a large cardboard box, duct tape, electrical tape, aluminun foil, and a desk lamp (I know it's ghetto as hell but it's all i had on hand, and I don't have alot of extra money to put into this). The box is a little over a foot in width, and about two feet in length. Will this be big enough for the plant?? I am useing a 45 watt incandescent light. I am able to buy a light but I am unsure of what I kind that I should buy because of the light being so close to the box. What kind of light should I use that I can buy at a regular store, like Lowes or Meijers?? The 45 watt incandescent doesn't heat the box up, it just gives a little warmth. The idea is for the box to sustain the plant until it can be transplanted during better weather, i am not going to be growing the plant in the box for more than two months. It is snowing outside, and around 30, but that's normal Febuary weather for where I live. In a month it should be much warmer and there shouldn't be any frost. Here are some pictures of the grow box, and seed. The plant that is already growing in the box is just okra that I put in the box to see if it would grow, and it seems like it is doing just fine with the incandescent. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will keep posting more pictures as the plant grows. This is the scrawny seed of the two that I have. looks fine for temporary growth. i would go with some high wattage flourescents try to get em around 6500k or somewhere around tht. also high lumen output. also you said its 2ft tall?
Get rid of the foil. It's not good for plants because it can reflect focused spots of light at the plant and burn it.
Thanks a bunch I didn't know that. I read in an article on another site that said the same thing and that white mylar is 95% reflective, and that it is the best reflective material for growing. What kind of store would carry sheets of white mylar, and would it be very expensive? A day ago, i changed my bulb to a 15 watt full spectrum compact spiral lamp bulb that I bought at menards for around $10, and the new bulb seems to really be helping the plant along. I tried a 75 and it was way to hot for the box. Does anyone have suggestions on what I could buy to make a better and safer grow box out of? I'm really not digging the cardboard and desklamp, very ghetto. A day ago a little sprout poked through the dirt and it has grown a bit since then. I'm really hoping that it's a lady. I will be getting some bubba kush seeds this monday, but I think that I am going to wait to germinate them. My plan was to plant until I get a female, then go to a garden supply store and buy root starter and just keep cutting off new plants. At first I got really freaked out about doing this, but as I am finding out, it's not rocket science. I'm really enjoying my new hobby.
