My First Grow, need some pointers.

  1. Hey this is my first grow I'm not to familiar with growing. I've read a good amount of stuff about it. This is my set up:

A 10 Gallon Fish Tank Lined with Aluminum Foil
An 18'' Flourescent Light with a Plant and Aquarium Bulb in it.(Is this good or should I go with something else?)
    15 Watts
    Initial Lumens: 510
    Color Temperature: 3100K
    CRI: 90

A Temp/Humidity Gauge (The Temp is 77 Degrees and the Humidity is 86%[is that to high?])

Any pointers would help so please correct me if I'm doing something wrong.

  2. First off go and but yourself some decent lights.

  3. What is your suggestions for lighting? Should I go with the Soft White, if so how many watts?

  4. you want 6500k for veg and 2700k-3000k for flowering, so that is not the best light(might be ok for flowering) and you need more watts/lumens, 100 watts per plant recommended, you could get away with 50 for now though.get some cool/daylight CFLS. You can buy a pack of 2 26 watt Cfl's at Walmart for 6.44. Humidity might be a lil high, and aluminum is not best reflective material, it can cause too much heat/burn, get some mylar.

  5. Read some journals, infact a lot of them, see what has worked and see the failures upgrade to HID lighting.

  6. Alright cool. Thanks everyone for pointers on making this work. I'll post back in a little to tell you whats going on.

  7. Go take a trip to walmart

Geta couple of cool white or daylight Compact Fluorescent Lights ( the curly bulbs) Get the biggest ones you can find and you want abotu 4 of them.

Paint the box with Flat White paint $.99 at walmart. Aluminum foilf makes hotspots on the plants which burns them and has very little reflection percentage compared to flat white paint.

Aim for about 4k average not initial lumens PER plant but 3k is acceptable for a younger plant.

  8. Alright thanks 420Grower420. I'll get the light bulbs and paint, but how should I set up the lights? Do I make a rig with 4 light sockets on a peice of wood and hang them over the plants? Or what do you suggest?

Sorry for so many questions, I'm just new and want to make sure this works.

  9. No problem, I suggest you go take a looka t my recent post "Everthing You Need to Know"
As for the lights, Walmart carries little 3 dollar packs that give you everything to make a socket mount on a wall.
If you dont want to do any electrical wiring, the store also carries plugs that connect into an electrical outlet ( extension cord, wall outlet etc) and on the other end is a light socket, you can buy 4 of those for $1 each and hook it up to an extension cord.

Look for these in lights. These have a light that is similar to HPS in spectrum, use these for flowering.

There are smaller lights in the store that say cool white or daylight, these have a bluer light and are more like Metal Halide, use them for veg growth. If you only have enough for a few lights, get the 42 watts, they will work for both cycles.

  10. Alright thats cool thanks for the information. Do these particular lights produce a lot of heat because I'm having a heat issue at the moment also. For what I stated in my first post I'm using the Plant and Aquarium light and I also added a 100W Soft White bulb hanging over my setup and its making things 10 degrees hotter. Also what are your suggestions about ventilation with little fans? Maybe ones that can be found at Wal-Mart since that seems to be the place to go.

  11. Yeah my very first grow I have 4 of those 17 watt grow tubes and 4 20 watt tubes and the grow went very slow.... these CFLs work much better. As for the heat, if you ahve a small fan lightly blowing on them, they are practically cool to the touch. I hope that 100w is fluorescent because incandescent lights wont grow anything. For ventellation you can use computer fans if you're pressed for space or oyu can get a little 15 dollar fan at walmart. Having that blow on your lights will cool them but you should also have a light breeze on the plant so it firms the stem and increases growth ( fresher air around leaves)

    Have fun : )

  12. Alright man thanks for all of this useful information I'll be sure to get all of this stuff at Wal-Mart and hopefully be a happy camper in a week or so.

  13. Well I just bought and setup everything you just told me and it looks quite well. Everything ran me about $65 which I guess in the long run is nothing but it looks well worth it. I got 4 42W CFL bulbs, a giant storage container that I painted flat white, a small 4" fan, and some electrical stuff. This setup looks promising and I'll try to post some pictures when and if I get around to it. Thanks so much for your input and help 420Grower420.
