My first ever grow - day 4!

  1. Hey!!

    I have three new babies!!

Well since my last post I've germinated three feminised seeds... and just potted them:

I used a simple mix of multi-purpose compost with perlite (3:1)

I've gone for a capillary matting system. Two foil trays with pots standing on the rear, under light, and the nearer tray holding water. The idea is to provide a resevoir where water is drawn across as required. I've put clay pebbles on the top to hold more water and cut down on evaporation (I think!).

Feed: I've also got some seaweed feed, which I've not added yet, will probably start with that in a few days.

Light: I can see I'll need more light, so I'll add an extra light soon as well

Question - This might sound mad but hear me through - Plants need water, right? and we know the roots also need to breath, right? And we also know that our babies grow better with CO2, so... is there any sense in watering with carbonated (C02) mineral water??? Don't laugh but I think I might be on to something...

  2. You might want to think again...

CO2 is used by the foliage, not by the roots. Spray it on the leaves.

Your capillary system is going to turn into an algae-fest in short order, due to being under the light.

  3. Thanks Rabiez, after posting I read several other posts on the idea about sparkling mineral water - got it. Not going to bother and just use pure mineral water without the bubbles.

    ;)

  4. ... what should I do about the matting then? Could I cover it with more clay pebbles or should I just bin the whole idea and water manually more often?

Also, I've just got a great deal on line for a 125w Ecolight (blue) and reflector for £39 ($60) including shipping, it will be her next week - then my little girls can tan themselves and bask in rich light!!!

  5. Chuck a bit of cardboard over it to keep the light out.

To be fair, you've only got about 3 weeks in those pots, so it won't be a huge problem.

  6. Well we are seven days in and here we are:

The third girl refuses to showherself yet!

Also I fitted a computer fan on the side and cut some holes. The fan was 12V so I reused an old mobile phone charger, which although is only 9V, worked perfectly. It probably runs a little slower but makes no noise at all.

Getting my new light tomorrow, will fit it soon. Sunday mornings have never been such fun!!

  7. im vegging with a 125w ecolite for the first time too, doing purty well for itself imho. ill post some pics soon, be nice to see how yours fair under him.. gl!

  8. ... just fitted my new light and shade:

... used a two hooks and couple of plug chains to give me adjustment as needed.

Really pleased with this, much larger than I thought! The whole unit (shade and 125w GrowKing lamp, plus good length of cable) came in at under £45 including post, which I think is pretty good. Check out Greens Horticulture in Bristol.

Let me know how you grow Mopr, we can buddy up on our results!!

So looking forward to trying some of my very own homegrow - yesterday I smoked some dusty old gear I had left over, Christ it nearly ripped my lungs out, but it still kicked like a mule! I thought old weed would loose its punch?! I lay down and listend to some deep trance (Enthogenic and Shpongle (AMAZING!!)) and was gone for hours!!

  9. Are you allowing the soil to get any air? From what i have read (book, and posts) MJ likes the soil to get dry every between waterings (I would be concerned about stem rot) plus it aids in nutrient uptake. Just though i would point that out. I am new to growing but i have read that they do not like saturated soil all the time. From the look of the seed in the center, it might have been allowed to germinate out of soil for too long. Again these are things i have just read. Anyone feel free to correct me.

  10. Day 9 Now -

I'm opening my grow cabinet every day (cant resist the chance to check on my girls!), plus I've installed a computer fan which is drawing air through some gaps, so air shouldn't be a problem.

    The new lamp...

...seems to be hotter than I had first expected but the light volume is much better. I'm keeping the seedlings about 4 inches away, as I'm worried they'll burn if I get them any closer.

RIP - my third seedling didn't make it. After giving her a few more days to show herself I've dug up a seed that clearly stopped growing, so she's gone and I've decided to replace her with another seed planted directly this time.

As to water I've found my resevoir system (using a second tray and capillary matting) works really well, although with more heat the water seems to have evaporated quite quickly. I'm now thinking to use a little less water as I reading that it's not good to over water, and it makes sense that the seedlings should work for their refreshment and put down deep roots.

All in all things are looking good - can't tell you how excited I was to see 'real' leaves!

:hello: having some fun with this!!!
