I've been looking around for a while on some flowering plants and I've noticed my buds are acting quite different than other people's. While most other grows teh main cola has the thickest and tallest bud mine plants lower, smaller colas seem to be kicking the main cola's ass. The only explanation I can think of is because the light being focused on the main cola is full spectrum (leans towards the blue end) and the lights on my lower colas are soft white (solely red spectrum). But that doesn't make much sense since the bottom two are a 42W and a 26W CFL while the top one is 105W CFL. Can anyone explain why this may be happening, or tell me it's not odd and I'm dumb. I've heard a way to make the top bud fatter is to cut of the tippy top of it. I may resort to this but I am afraid it will stress the plant and cut its THC production and possibly hermie it. Are my fears unfounded? Have any of you heard of / used this technique? Here's a pic to give you an idea of what I'm talking about. Any input will be greatly appreciated . Edit: another cause of concern is that the top bud's white hairs are not as nearly as prominent as other's that I've seen at this stage (day 21). The hairs on the very top are a little long than 2-3 mm, while on the rest of the lower buds they are 8-11 mm.
I dont think your lights are really doing the trick, there doing fine, but you need more light on the canapy. over top the plant. atleast IMO i grew with lights watts under yours and i had a BIG cola.
I'll move the 42 W right in line with the top cola but I wanna leave the 26W where it is and just rotate the plant every day or two. Edit: 20 more posts til awesome
Haha, id actually reccomend you keep the lights on the sides like that, i noticed for your lighting your popcorn nugs are doing rather decent, its the main cola thats lacking. Id get another cfl with redder spectrum man and put it up on top, just a reccomendation, you dont have to do anything, im not an expert by any means but im pretty sufficiant with floros
i think its commin along man its kinda spacy in the middle cuz there isnt as many nodes for the buds to grow out, as there is in the lower half, it should catch up though. what r u feeding her?
yeah IF possible, just add another light to the top and keep those 2 down there. If not I would say keep on low and one up
thats some fucked up plant evry leef got 3 clovers on it lol trippy the reason u clip the top ur plant is to gain an xtra head i bend mine the givin me 3 ,4 nd 5 heads on some plants super bushy aswell
I'm feeding her a 20-20-20 nute during everyother watering. I also put blood meal and bone into the soil before it was transplanted. Toppotgrower, I think it only has 3 leaves and at the top only 1 because I put it under 12/12 the instant it germed but I'm not sure. It does make her look quite unattractive though lol. But as long as she produces the dankness I will love her anyway. I know that what topping and LST are but I meant that cutting the top of a bud itself will make it fatter, or so I've heard. Has anyone here done it? I'm going to try and get another soft white CFL tomorrow so until I get one I will put the 42W up higher and keep the 26W where it is. And thanks to everyone who has replied .
I don't have anything to add about the bud production but I can comment on your question about clipping the buds. I seen a post by MisterPostman (I'm not sure if he posted it to this forumn) which he did the same thing. From the pics I sas of his buds they seemed to be really fat at the top instead of the usual point. They looked like ball of bud at the top, it was very interesting and I plan on trying the same thing. I believe he clipped his earlier in flowering than you are now. He said he clipped the top of the developing bud cutting into the stem. Great results IMO
The ferts you are using are for veg not flower. For flowering you want want the middle number (phosphorous) highest and less nitrogen.
buzb8lvr, after rechecking your NL plants in this forum I must ask which ferts you use? I still can't believe how big those buds are for being between 28-34 days old. HPS shouldn't help THAT much.
The problem may be that top light. You said it is "full spectrum", tell us more about that. "Full spectrum" doesn't necessarily mean "total" spectrum, it means that the bulb puts out some red and some blue frequencies (and maybe others) but it may be lacking output in MJ's sweet spot. I would add some red-spectrum CFLs to the top (leave the "full spectrum" bulb in place).
Truth be told I don't know much about it. It's my friends and I said it looked like it was only blue spectrum and he ran me over with a car several times while shouting, "IT"S FULL SPECTRUM!!!" I will take a quick look on google maybe that will help.
A quick check and I found that it's most likely a 4100K light. That should be basically in the middle of red and blue, hrm I wonder why it's still not working that great. Is it possible it's too close? 105 Watts half an inch away may be too powerful?
Yep, it's in between the two spectrum bands you need, so it's a whole lot of nothing (well, not quite nothing but not enough of the right stuff). Confirms to me you need to get some red-spectrum light on the top but it's good to leave the 4100k in the mix.
(quote) The only explanation I can think of is because the light being focused on the main cola is full spectrum (leans towards the blue end) and the lights on my lower colas are soft white (solely red spectrum). Yeah I know but I suspect a 4 W light that puts out in the blue spectrumdoes worse than a 40 W light that puts out in the blue spectrum. Basically I thought that because the light was so much stronger than the other two it would make up for its less than desirable color/spectrum.
Nah I agree with toasty if it's 4100k it's just wasting a lot of energy. That's the 105w one right? Make sure it's 4100k and if it is, I'd just turn it off and replace it. If it was higher like 55-6500k then it'd be good as plants can use that blue. Yeah red is better but if it's all ya got use it. I'd say another 42w soft white CFL for the top would get you going. Oh and btw, you whooped my ass in posts.
well man for the current and last grows i've been using all Fox Farm stuff. Ocean Forrest soil, Grow Big fert for veg, Tiger Bloom for flower, and Big Bloom for veg and flower. they are about $20 per bottle but if you are only doing a small number of plants at a time then they will last you a long time. only other thing i really use is epsom salt on occasion and a bit of superthrive when they are very young. i've seen some impressive grows with flouros but you'd be surprised how much difference HID lighting can make. i'm also pretty fanatical about LSTing. using LST made a drastic difference in yields.
You need a better light. At least a 150 hps for that one plant. A 150 is good for about 2 by 2 thats it. And I would tie that plant down and train it so that the light hits the plant even all along the cola. You wont have one giant bud on top, but a bunch of little solid buds.
