While I agree with most that it shouldn't be a big deal, It greatly depends on how it's done and how it's perceived by him.

If you are demonstrating a clear break from action and emotion in order to take a swig of water (or change the channel, or to yell @ the pet, or to do whatever else), it can easily come off as "She was never into it, and can easily break from sex mode to take a swig of water."
I'm not saying it has to come off as such, or that it should, but it can, and in this case, since he's complaining, it should at least be considered as a possibility.

This is where it depends on how it is done. If you take a quick swig, while still @ it with him, then that is np. It is done super casually on the side, while the sex still occupies 99% of the action.
If however the water getting results in a clear disruption of the physical/emotional rhythm, then I can see how this could be a problem for him.

I've both taken drinks during sex, and had my girl take a drink. It never bothered either of us, but since it clearly is bothering him, I'm pointing out how or why that might be the case. Fact is, it is something that is bothering him.
If it is just a quick swig with no real interruption, then he should adjust. If it is a legit interruption, then his objection has some validity.
