Moving to SF Valley, few MMJ questions

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by Braves4590, Mar 24, 2010.

  1. This summer I'll be relocating to Cali in the San Fernando Valley area. I have always suffered from Migraines (my dad had them too, he had to take an injectable shot of imitrix to get rid of his). I've always found MJ to help, and although I don't really have insomnia, MJ does help me fall asleep when I need it.

    1. How difficult is it to get a doctor's recommendation? I've heard from some sources that say all you have to do is go to a specialist doctor and they'll write a rec for a few bills. I've also heard that some doctors are very strict and want proof, which wouldn't be too bad since I've had scripts for imitrix for years for my migraines.

    2. How strict are Valley cops about weed? Assuming I have a card.

    3. I'm only 19, will that make it harder to get a rec/card?

    4. What's the difference between dispensaries, compassion clubs, and caregivers?

Any other advice, thoughts, or info please feel free to share.

  2. Hi!

It was easy for me to get a doctor's recommendation, and I went to one of the "strict" doctors. I was required to provide a copy of my medical records showing that I have been treated for migraines in the last year. My understanding is that other doctors are more loosey-goosey.

I have never had a problem with the police, but I mostly smoke at home and keep a low profile. A few years ago I saw on the news that the Burbank police confiscated a woman's medical marijuana at the airport and she had trouble getting it back, even though she had a card. I don't remember the details or how it turned out.

I don't know if I ever got all the definitions straight in my head. I would get my weed at a dispensery. I listed a friend as a caregiver so he could pick it up for me. I think a caregiver can legally grow plants for you, and maybe the dispensery can be considered your caregiver as they are providing the weed.

  3. 1. It's easy, I would suggest going to the 'strict' doctors as they are probably legitimate, people on here would tell you that you need to spend 100-150 on it or it's not legit.

    2. Not strict, I don't live in SF valley (live in san gabriel valley) but it's not like it's far, and I haven't ever had any problems with police. I usually smoke at home or in someone else's home, but never had problems smoking in parks, driving, etc. if that helps answer your question.

    3. Nope

    4. Never seen a compassion club, dispensaries (I belong to a coop, basically same thing unless you are wanting to get involved with it) are just places you go, you'll have to sign up with them and then you usually just show them your card and sign in or however the place does it and then they'll have all the strains in jars you can usually smell them and whatnot, they'll also probably have edibles/clones/drinks/oils/hash and more. You can have someone be your caregiver and they can then grow and supply you. Remember, YOU can grow with your card if you are in a situation where you can do that, but I would recommend you just find a good club/dispensary and join up.

  4. Thanks both of you, very helpful stuff. About the cops, I meant will they arrest you for weed or just take it away and send you on your way (say if you were cruising or blazing at some spot).

  5. If you have the medical card they won't do anything. If you're smoking in say a park, I imagine they could potentially take away your bud even with the card I'm not sure, but worst case scenario is they take your bud and slap you with a 100$ ticket. I honestly wouldn't expect them to do that though unless they have a stick up their ass.

Remember even without a card you aren't going to be arrested in Cali, it's just a 100$ ticket, unless you have a shitload haha, not sure what they do with paraphernalia, but it's practically legal here you shouldn't worry about it, I smoke j's driving down the freeways and shit and haven't ever been bothered, I think if you're wanting to smoke outside of a private location just be aware but not worried.

Yes, you will get your card. It is easier then anything, that's exactly how it works.

    2. How strict are Valley cops about weed? Assuming I have a card.

They can't do shit. Insist that they NEVER confiscate anything from you.

    3. I'm only 19, will that make it harder to get a rec/card?

No, the legal age is 18. It won't make it any harder.

    4. What's the difference between dispensaries, compassion clubs, and caregivers?

Dispensaries: A store that sells marijuana if you have your card, normally requires a membership but some places don't. More of a one or so time place then a main place unless it's a great place.

Compassion Clubs: Are more community, family based. They normally will have a lot of free weed and are composed of people suffering from the same disease or all use marijuana to cope with their disease. More upscale places you can make your caregiver to get super good stuff! I believe you have to have a membership along with your cannabis card, I may be wrong though.

Caregiver: Are designated by patients. California probably has very loose caregiver laws. It allows you to grow, buy and possess for and in a patients name. In California I think you need two people to be a caregiver, but if you have your card, there is no point.

Any other advice, thoughts, or info please feel free to share.

It's super easy to get your card, don't worry to much. If you make a club your caregiver, they will give super good discounts and whatnot. Make sure you find the best one.

    Good Luck.

  7. Thanks, that's all really helpful. I was wondering if there are different types of cards. I know you can use a doctor's rec... and there is the STATE medical marijuana card, then are there club cards too? It's pretty confusing.

Also, what steps do I have to take after I get a doctor to write me a recommendation (is that what he does? i'm imagining they write a small note on a prescription paper lol). Where do I get the physical card?
