  1. if anyone watches this movie, i swear to god i'll track them down by their email and rip their eyes out, fuck the whole theme of the is supposted be like dark and shit, the title is "DARKO" the main character cant be some prissy bitch, assholes ruined my favorite film of all time

  2. I just watched Donnie Darko for the first time tonight. I'm pretty confused by it. I understand liking the whole mood and atmosphere of the movie, but I dont know if I exactly get it. I think some of the stuff was left open and unexplained. I think a lot of trippy movies do that too, I think they hope to make up for their lack of making sense by just throwing in REALLY random things to confuse/interest us.
Movies like that can be thought about it sooo many different ways, and who ever really knows the real point without looking it up? You should be able to know what its about by the end, and I dont think a lot of trippy movies do that

  3. Great list. To stick to the original topic, I think if you really enjoyed Donnie Darko most of these are not really in the same genre so much as similar in a "vibey" way. The whole atmosphere-type thing. I also recommend Richard Kelly's second movie after Donnie Darko, "Southland Tales". A lot of people didn't like it but trust me, it gets better with time like a fine wine.

  4. the girl playing the sister is the same actress that played in donnie darko..
but as far as directing and whatnot, you are correct

  5. Some gems here, didnt see a movie called "The Nines" here. Maybe not that similar, but gave me the same puzzled feeling after watching! I highly recommend..:D donnie darko was good, not soo impressed with the sequel as usually is the case

  8. Well thats why there's a director's cut version of the movie. Watch that one and maybe it will help you understand more.

The movie was about how a tangent universe was created because a jet engine appeared out of nowhere. The engine is the "Artifact". According to "Philosophy of Time Travel", tangent universes are extremely unstable and can collapse within several weeks, causing a black hole to form and destroying all existence. In this case, it was the 28 days thing, i don't remember how many hours, minutes and seconds.

Frank was Donnie's sister's boyfriend, and the bunny suit was his costume for the halloween party; he dies because Donnie shoots him in the eye at the party. Frank is also the "Manipulated Dead". The Manipulated Dead can travel through time and help out the "Living Receiver". The Living Receiver is able to create portals using water to travel through time. Living Receivers can have special powers like telekinesis, conjuring water/fire, superhuman strength, etc. Donnie Darko is the Living Receiver. Frank helps him by instructing him to do certain things. Examples of this: Frank tells Donnie to leave the house at night before the engine kills Donnie in order to have Donnie save the universe; Frank tells Donnie to flood the school in order to have him meet Gretchen Ross; Frank tells Donnie to burn down Jim Cunningham's house to reveal his involvement with child pornography. These events trigger off a chain of a bunch of other events which basically leads to Donnie understanding what he has to do.

The Living Receiver's job is to send the Artifact back to the primary universe in order to give it a reason for appearing out of nowhere in the first place; once the Living Receiver accomplishes this, the tangent universe closes and everything is reset. At the end of the 28 days, a storm appears, and the black hole is about to form. An airplane gets sucked into the storm. Donnie uses telekinesis to send the ripped off jet engine through the time portal he created, thus closing the tangent universe. That's Donnie's display of telekinesis. He "conjures" water and fire when he floods the school and burns down Jim's house. He shows superhuman strength when he cuts into a solid bronze statue with an axe.

That's basically what the movie is about in a nutshell. If you watch the director's cut, all of this becomes clear and easier to interpret because they show excerpts from the Philosophy of Time Travel, which basically explains all of Donnie's hallucinations.

Oh and Jena Malone is so fucking cute in this movie, she's become one of my favorite actresses because of this movie.

As for movies like Donnie Darko, I'm assuming that you mean trippy/psychedelic movies? Here's my list:

    Requiem for a Dream
Revolver (NOT THE US VERSION, ONLY THE UK VERSION, THERE'S A HUGE DIFFERENCE)
Fight Club (This movie was good, but the book is amazing)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (This one isn't purposefully psychedelic, but its still trippy)
Blueberry (Really trippy when the main character drinks ayahuasca)
Across the Universe (This is a love story, but it has all beatles music in it and its somewhat trippy)
and finally, A Clockwerk Orange (In my opinion its over rated but its an ok movie)

DO NOT watch S. Darko. It's fucking terrible. Your eyes will bleed.

  9. damn i didnt even realize that movie was just a bunch of bullshit lol

  10. wow this thread cleared alot up for me. i think i finally understand this damn movie. :)

  12. S. Darko = FAIL

  13. the only people that i know that just rave on how amazing d darko is seem to have some sort of mental disorder like manic depression or bipolar or they are emo/goths..

no offence, just something i noticed.

  14. Maybe you hang with the wrong people (no offence ofc)

  15. Prejudice and stereotypes are usually taken with offense, despite your "no offense" (it's spelled with an "s" btw). I enjoyed Donnie Darko because it is original, creative, trippy, and it made me think about life.

  16. You come off as a very simple minded person here. Especially the "emo/goths" bit

no offence, just something i noticed

  17. As for movies that you're looking for, I suggest DARK CITY

  18. S Darko was horrible, not even written by the same guy! D Darko is in my top 10 of movies, right up there with Man from Earth, The Machinist, The Prestige, Requium for a Dream, Thirteen, The Dreamers, Waking Life.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "The Butterfly Effect"

How can you tell the difference between the two? When looking for it, UK or US version isn't mentioned.
