most sustainable food source

  1. I know what your thinking and its not vegan!

With global food and fuel crises on a lot of people's minds, food sustainability has become a big issue.

There is a solution, but most people in developed nations probly wont like it.

    Insects!

When compared to meat, insects tend to be many times more efficient.
Most insects have a 4-1 energy to protein conversion ratio, compaired to cows at 54-1.
Insects are also rich in essential vitamins and nutrients.
They reproduce much faster in terms of biomass and the reproduce on a shorter time sscale.

One female insect can lay thousands of eggs in a month or two. In a cattle lot you need several bredder cows for every one cow you plan.to eat.

Insects are far smaller and can be grown in containers in ones own house.

Insect farms can also be portable, which allows for homeless people to farm them.

Insects can also convert things we can't eat unto food. For example termites eat wood. Humans can't eat wood. Cows typically are fed grains and thus take away from human food.

Now why did I say its more sustainable then a vegan diet? The reason is because most plants that humans can eat are labor intensive crops that take.time to grow.

Incects can eat any kind of grass leaves or wood in the case of termites. Grass grows extremely fast, much faster then potatoes and can yield more.calories in incects more reliably in your own homw tthen trying to grow an entire food crop.

A good way to be self sufficient with little space is to have a box to grow grass. A box to grow bugs. Some short season veggies. And then whatever other fruits and veggies you have room for.

    There are some disadvantages however.

Not all insects can be eaten.
    Sometimes severe allergic reactions.
If you eat wild insects you can be poisoned by pestacides and pollution.
If you don't cook the insects you can get parasites.

But if you have a well maintained farm and keep it clean and properly prepaid your food, it is safe healthy and environwntally friendly as well as super CHEAP

  2. Been saying this for awhile now. I need to find a good source to buy some.

  3. Well, I have only ate insects one time, they were fine but I don't know whether they are healthy or not. Insects may be a good alternative to overcome food shortage, but there is no such food issue in developed countries so they people there may not be agree to promote this trend.

  4. There will be in the near future.

Also, insects are extremely healthy. They have been a staple in human and early human diet everywhere for the past 2 million years.

If there is a global economic collapse it will he a good habit.

But also, just from an economic standpoint, insects are the cheapest easiest to produce food source.

  6. I dont like the idea of having to eat insects. If we could get all the same nutrients inside of a pill, with the insects ground up and inserted into the pill, then I would be wiling to do so.

Imagine just popping a few pills for breakfast and some throughout the day?

  7. I'd rather eat a meal of grasshopper stir fry...that actual sounds like it would hit the spot right about now.

  8. Im....good, but thanks for the suggestion.

  9. ^ Don't knock it if you havent tried it

80% of the entire human population eats insects. We are just spoiled here in.developed nations

Im sure it's totally natural, just doesn't seem appealing.
