  1. The course will be online, so I expect it will be open to folks not in Mississippi, but it won't start for a year. :( However, I expect there will be a high number of folks applying for a spot in the classes, so you might want to get your application in early!

Ole Miss to offer medical marijuana master's degree. Here's what to know Ole Miss to offer medical marijuana master's degree. Here's what to know

Ole Miss' history in the medical marijuana field dates back to 1960s when the university began researching the subject and built a cannabis growing facility. Now, the university is advancing that history by adding a master's program focused on medical cannabis and dietary supplements.

The two-year online program under the School of Pharmacy opens fall 2024 and will be split between learning about two industries — dietary supplements and medical marijuana, both of which are currently on the rise of use in the United States.

David Colby, director of online graduate programs in the biomedical sciences department, said the medical cannabis and dietary supplements master's program will be unique in the nation.

"The purpose is to provide advanced training for people who are seeking employment or want to advance their current jobs in dietary supplements, which could be herbal products or medical cannabis," Colby said.

While it will overlap in some ways with other programs in the nation, the program at Ole Miss will center more on training students to design products rather than teaching people how to use cannabis products. It won't necessarily focus on diseases and treatment.

"We're more focused on providing the skills for people to be successful in the industry," Colby said.

The program will follow the expertise found in the University of Mississippi, Colby said.

"We're a national leader in dietary supplements and medical cannabis," Colby said. "And now we're going to fully build a curriculum across our university to serve our students."

The program will operate separate from the growing facility on campus and will focus on educating and training those entering industry positions to be effective in their roles. In addition to students beginning their careers, this program is designed for those already in the dietary supplements or medical cannabis industries who want to advance their careers.

"Since it's entirely online, we do expect that we will have students that are partially or fully employed, particularly maybe even already fully employed in the industry, but they want to move ahead. So perhaps they're operating in an entry-level position and they want to move into something with regulatory affairs or something with formulation and manufacturing, or look at more analytical chemistry or R and D (research and development)," Colby said. "They will be able to do that with this degree." (snipped)

  3. I think its great but agree that the slang term seems a bit shallow for a program like that.

  4. I think the problem is that we don't have a word for "smoking" cannabis! "Hemp" describes cannabis with less than 0.3% THC. "Cannabis", although scientifically correct, covers all varieties of the plant. So what should we call our high THC cannabis? :confused_2: "High THC cannabis" just doesn't roll off your tongue easily.

"Marijuana" is slang and based on racist attitudes, but people recognize it, and "medical marijuana" has that nice alliteration of the "m" (we do seem to like alliterations). So we may be stuck with "marijuana".

  5. right now we have classifications . THCa is type one plant , CBDa/ THCa is type two , CBDa plant is type three
that is how we are classifying the cannabinoid contents and naming the plants ...

as to hemp and marijuana - why not call the fibrous form Hemp and the flowering form Cannabis ??
if the Scheduling of Cannabis plant changes the DEA wording of Marijuana as smoke o cannabis sativa L matters not Shit at that point ... people will be like why the hell did we keep furthering that nightmare word ... people need to look further and not just use the common norm so other people do not have to learn a new word - LOL
