Mix Vermiculite with soil?

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by Skurr, Feb 9, 2009.

  1. Should I mix vermiculite with the soil to make it more "airy" and able to hold water well?

  2. Sure, though I prefer perlite over vermiculite.

  3. Doesnt that also lower the PH when its too high?

  4. I thought it was a polymer with neutral pH. May be wrong, though.

Perlite is inert, it is basically volcanic glass that has been heated until it rapidly expands, like popcorn. This is why it is light and fluffy and retains moisture. Since it is inert glass it does not affect pH. Vermiculite also is a natural mineral that has been heated and "popped" for similar properties, but it can raise your pH.
