Minimum marijuana for tincture?

  1. How much bud do you actually NEED to make a batch of either alcohol or glycerin tincture.

I am wanting to get back into making tinctures and edibles, but I want to do it the right way. I was HOPING I could just start off buying a 1/2 oz and split that into one alcohol batch and one glycerin batch. Would this be enough to make little experimental batches?

I have a decarboxylator on hand and I'm wanting to experiment with different alcohol and glycerin tinctures. Of course, I don't want to waste while I experiment and don't necessarily have the money to buy pounds of bud to throw around.

Every recipe says to use 1 oz. I was hoping to avoid using a whole oz in every batch I make until I find what I personally like the most.

There is a stickied thread Another Tincture thread. PsychedelicSam gives a recipe using 3.5 grams of bud. The recipe are listed in an index in the first post.
I'll edit this, but leave the wrong answer. You need 7 grams of bud for P'Sam's recipe.

  3. You should work backward.
How much volume do you want to take for how many mg thc?
Knowing this will allow for using the right amount of herb.

  4. The question should be how strong do you want to make it?

I figure mine by taking the source material multiplied by milligrams, multiplied by thc by weight (typically 15%), multiplied by 75% for extraction efficiency. That gives total thc.

So if you start with a 1/2 oz, or 14g, you get:
    14g x 1,000mg. x 0.15 x 0.75 = 1,575mg

That is your total thc content. Then ask yourself how strong do you want it. You can essentially dial it to whatever you like within reason. I use 30 ml medicine bottles, so I shoot for that volume, but you could go more or go less.

In my case I take 1,575mg divide by 30ml and end up with 52.5mg per ml.

For my personal taste and tolerance that gives me a great range. I can take 0.25ml and get a mild buzz or take a full ml and have a pretty heavy 8 hour experience. You can play with the numbers and really create whatever potency per volume suits your tastes.

Hope that helps, best of luck, let us know if you have questions!

  6. There is no minimum amount required, it’s all about how many doses of what strength you want to make.
If you use the 150mg of thc per gram average, experiment with how much liquid you used and divide accordingly.
Total amount of liquid = 150mg thc x grams used, .10 of liquid used equals 15mg of thc per grams used. It doesn’t matter how much you use, it is just a math problem and what your intentions are for your experiments. Liquid can be reduced with evaporation, but it is still (roughly) 150mg per gram of product that you started with, then divide the amount of liquid accordingly.
That is the strength of your dose.

For very small batches a garlic press, about $15 bucks, will squeeze out most of the liquid from the product.
Place the last bit of saturated weed in a pocket of coffee filter and squeeze the hell out of it. The garlic press will pay for itself quickly.

  7. I have literally just started my first batch, it’s in the mb machine now. The booklet that comes with it says 7-28g per cup..

  8. What is the typical % of THC that ends up being infused with Everclear? Does anyone know them?

I reading about all edibles as I am new to making them. I have a decarb machine and want to know what is going to extract the most THC from my flower.

I like that now I can choose my strain when making edibles. I hate the generic “Hybrid” they have on the store bought and never as strong as they state. The flower seems to be spot on though for med here in Florida.
