So I am talking to a recruiter on monday, and I'm 100% positive the army is what I want to do. I've already isolated a few MOS that I want, but would love some input on others. Pretty much, from anybody, what was your least fav, most fav, part of your MOS, BCT, and the overall experiance. P.S. I'm leaning towards 91F, so anybody from that MOS your input is like doubly as helpful... Thanks
Whats your asvab score? All mos's arent open to you unless you have a high score. I was a 35p(Linguist) when i was in.
nice dude im joining the army too I live in So-Cal Took the ASVAB test like a week ago, waiting for clearance on my paperwork to take the medical exam I hope i get in. Glad to see another blade joining the service, haha im excited too.
While I don't want to go back and do it again, I still look back at my time (20 + years ago!) in the Army fondly. It can be a highly formative time in your life. I worked and used my GI bill to complete a degree from a public university, my first home was purchased with a VA loan, and successful military service always looks good on your resume. 91F looks like an interesting MOS. I was 13B (Cannon Crewman), but after about 6 months at my duty assignment, I was assigned to be the Battalion Mail clerk (which is probably the easiest job you could have!). I had other friends I'd gone to basic with that served as officer's drivers or in other staff positions, so be aware that there can be duties outside your given MOS. I think this is a great opportunity to make a positive step in your life. The only advice I've given consistently over the years is: If you really can't handle authority or you are hell bent on fucking up then the military isn't for you....Cussing out your boss (or teacher) and getting fired or s DUI or a positive drug test may suck in civilian life, but in the military it generally means jail and a record.
Lol actually I was going to join the nat. Guard, but then walked into a recruiter office, and in like 30 min he had me pumped for basic. And I thought I was good. My dad suggested I wait, and I did, changed my mind. Now I've been talking to a friend who was just deployed to korea, and I've gotten all the info Ineed, he's going to talk me through my recruiter, and basic and such. It's such a huge help. I don't need encouragement, I know it's what I want. I wanted peoples opinions on the jobs they did, so I could get some actual experiance on some dif MOS so I could have a more info when I chose mine, after all I am going to be doing this for a while.
Congrats man. Ever since I was a little kid I've wanted to be in the Army (Rangers or SF just like any kid's dream). Damn epilepsy ruined that dream for me, and now I'm in a hell I like to call law school. Anyways, pardon the digression. I say go 40X or 18X. I don't know what you are into, but I always wanted to be one of the guys doing a lot of shooting. Make sure you pick a few MOS' you would like. You don't want to get there with only one in mind and find out you can't get it.
I disliked the Army. The rank structure is what I hated most. Anyone above you has a right to treat you like dirt, punish you for the mistakes of others, play mind games with you, etc. This sort of leadership is pretty much considered virtuous. Not my thing. However, there were many people who did enjoy the Army, so to each his own. The things I liked most about the Army weren't the experiences. I wasn't crazy about firing weapons and rolling around in the mud. I liked the job perks. Free food/shelter/health care, guaranteed paycheck, three-day weekend about once a month, and so on. I knew some 91F guys in my maintenance company, they were pretty cool. From what I understand they'd go to their shop, fix M16's or whatever weapons needed fixing, maybe go to a unit's arms room and do whatever it is they do. Obviously because I didn't have that MOS I can't tell you exactly what it was they did, but none of those guys seemed to be rocket scientists. In that MOS you have about the same likelihood of getting into combat as a paper-pusher does. Which is to say, maybe during guard duty or driving through Karbala or something, but you sure as hell won't be kicking in doors or arresting suspects. Basic training is pretty much what you've seen on TV. The only thing you need to know about it is that the drill sergeants are just normal Joes that get paid to administer the culture shock of the military, not civilian, life. They're not actually psychotic sadists, it's all just part of the "break you down, build you back up" process. Just keep your mouth shut and try to enjoy watching their antics. Without smiling of course.
haha yea exactly drill sergeants scared the fuck out of me for the first couple weeks, then once your platoon starts showin them you guys are competent and you just dont fuck up all the time they turn into normal people, some of the funniest things ive ever laughed at had something to do with drill sergeants fuckin with people or tellin a story or something
I'm in the Reserves.. Am a Combat Engineer- do route clearance.. find IEDs, all that bullshit. Good luck. I was in Ft Leonard Wood for 4 months and it sucked. edit: and I agree w/ weedzilla420's post above^^
The OP has made it pretty clear what the subject of this thread is. Talking about the pros/cons of different MOS's. Not the morality, the wisdom or the lack thereof involved in joining the army. As you can see, I've decimated the thread taking out the off topic posts per the OP's request and would strongly suggest that if you don't have personal knowledge of an MOS, to not post in the thread. On topic for thread: I wouldn't suggest cook/foodservice. No idea what the MOS for that is these days, but twenty years ago it involved long hours at weird intervals and a combination of respect/fear (they have the food!) and hatred. The plus side is we got out of guard duty, etc...
What made you choose 91F? It seems like it would be a pretty cake MOS but im just curious as to what made you choose that one? Was the recruiter kinda pushing you into that one? Just be aware of what they say man, those guys can be like used car salesmen... I was 11B1P when I was in (airborne infantry). I wish I had picked something different though. Something that would have translated over to the civilian sector. Dont get me wrong, jumping was cool, got air assault school, sniper school and was on an awesome LRRS team, got some combat in Iraq, 2 years as a security contractor in Assghanistan, but now Im a MAINTENANCE GUY!! Not many people hiring for my skill set! So, my words of wisdom are think of your future! Oh and have fun and stay safe. Thanks in advance for your service. Oh and yeah, what Fencewalker said. DO NOT GO COOK.
Thank you Fencewalker, I wish I had your powers I'm not going cook. I was originally thinking that, but soo many people even before GC have warned me, so I am not doing dat. I was thinking 91F because I like guns, and shooting, and figured it be a cool way to support the infantry and combat without actually being in combat. I actually picked out twelve MOS, and stuff like Imagery analyst really appeals to me. It all depends on my ASVAB. I'll know more tomorrow after my recruiter meeting at 9:00.
All of our weapons were worked on by civilians, I never once met the actual MOS for it. Try looking into UAV operator or something, that'd be fun I think.
I did look at UAV operater for a little bit, it would be pretty cool.. So is Imagery analyst, aka guys who look at UAV pics and find enemy stuff... Although right now I'm seriously considering 19D.. Cavalry Scout.
