migraines and medical marijuana question

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by Deaths_Arrow, Sep 6, 2007.

  1. i have been getting chronic (no pun intended) migraines i think since about 4th or 5th grade, and I'm now entering college. i have tried countless medications and not one of them has worked for an extended period of time as of yet. most medications that have been prescribed work for somewhere between 2 weeks and 6 months, so i am forced to constantly look for a new solution. i first tried marijuana recreationaly a year or so ago, but i have noticed that as I use it more frequently my migraines occur less and less frequently. now i am a little less then a once a day smoker but i am only getting migraines every couple of months where as a year ago i was getting them weekly. is medical marijuana right for me? i am also trying to find an explanation as to why marijuana helps cure migraines because i like to understand what goes in my body.

anyone who has experience or expertise with this subject your help is greatly appreciated.

  2. i too suffer from migranes but smoking weeds makes my head pound worse wierd huh? its the only time i dont smoke. i finished college last year and the migranes stopped, i think its stress i hope yours go away too

  3. This is a big area of interest for me. I, too, suffer from chronic migraines and have been exploring marijuana as a possible preventative and/or treatment. I used to smoke in high school and college and never had a migraine during that whole period despite the fact that I've averaged about 1 migraine every 1-2 months since the age of 6 until they became chronic while I was in law school. It has not been particularly effective for me since I started trying it now, but I have not been regimented or regular in my use.

I'd like to invite you to visit my blog and learn and share about the topic there. I'm a big advocate of medical marijuana, regardless of whether it works for me or other migraineurs. I hear a lot of annecdotes from people who say it does work for them, but it should be an option for everyone in this country who suffers from chronic or cancer-related pain.

Anyway, off soapbox. I just wanted to reach out. :)

  4. As someone who use to suffer from migraines everyday and now still occasionally gets one I can offer you the following pieces of advice and information.

I, like you, also started around the same age, 7th grade for me and I'm now entering college , I have been treated on a variety of meds, most recently topamax.

As I'm sure you are already aware there are things that will trigger migraines more than others. for instance lack of sleep is one of my biggest triggers. I usually find that I sleep deeper if I've smoked that night, thus taking away a a big trigger.

I also find that smoking when i get the initial aura, I can usually minimize the migraine, and function under it. Most of all I find that when i smoke in the early onset of headache, is that I don't get the eye thing(not everyone gets that anyway but a lot of people do) where everything is blurry, and doesn't process correctly.

I will also say that in the last year since I became a regular smoker, 1-3 times a day usually, the frequency of my headaches has been reduced pretty significantly going from about 3 a month to one every other month or so, a huge improvement to me. I've also noticed that the severity of the headaches is usually lesser, or maybe I'm just better at dealing with them.

I also not the only person I know who uses MJ to prevent migraines, A good friend of mine acutally does as well, and the last time he got a migraine(the first in a year) about 2 weeks ago, was about 3 days after he stopped smoking because his grandmother was visiting. I remember it was really bad too, slurring words, completely blacked out.

Anyway as I'm heading to California for school, i intend to get medical mj, I'm bring my medical records from my neurologist to prove the condition as well.

p.s. there are times when I've smoked a bit later, once the headache has actually started, usually under those conditions it really either doesn't help or makes it worse.

p.s.s. btw if you are getting a headache, and our not under conditions to smoke, I personally take Excedrin migraine, usually with a can of soda for the extra caffine. I've found that it really is the only non-prescription medicine that can stop one dead in it's tracks

  5. i never really thought about it but ever since i began smoking multiple times a day i haven't had more than 3 migraines in the past 2 or 3 years.....real interesting...before smoking i had one every week..completely shut me down for the day and kinda messed up some school work b.c. i would always go home if i had one...

  6. I too suffered from chronic migraines. It runs in my family. It all stopped once I started smoking.

  7. thanks to everyone for confirming my theory, but I'm still trying to figure out why THC or some other caniboid can help with migraines, anyone know? I"m going to be headed to school in Oregon so i think i will look into their medical resources near me

  8. I've been self medicating with MMJ for my migranes the last 4 years. It works wonders.

I don't know why it works, but it does. That's the bottom line.
