Microwave Died!

  1. Bought a new Kenmore Microwave (made by LG) from Sears last summer, now it won't heat or cook anything, the carousel just spins around, makes noise, and it smells like something electronic has burned out. It's still under warranty, but we would have to drag it in to Sears, we dont' have a car, and it's snowing. For the hundred twenty bucks we paid it's not worth it so it's off to a closer store later or tomorrow to buy a new one. Hopefully the new one won't be a lemon.

If it wasn't snowing and freezing out this woudn't be so bad, lol.

  2. look online for reviews of a reliable model first

  4. You know microwave ovens aren't that tough to fix depending on the problem. One of my old ones had a fuse problem that we were able to fix ourselves.

Also, cooking without one is pretty easy and better for you. Give yourself a week or two without one and see if you start eating better.

  5. I have a microwave that's over 25 years old and it still works perfectly :D

Yes, thanks but on this unit there's no fuse that is user-accessable, it's probably the magnitron, or possibly a blown diode, from what I've read. I may take it back to Sears service center but right now is not the time.

I found a GE MW in my neighborhood that's 90 bucks, and will probably buy it tomorrow. If I get a year out of it I'll be satisfied.

I don't use it for everything, it's used more for heating things up than cooking. The stovetop and a toaster over get more use for cooking.

  7. I think that the simpler ones are better, we used to have a small Welbuilt, from like 25 years ago, that never died. Wish we had kept that as a backup.

  8. I think my microwave is on the downhill also. It makes a pretty disturbing noise, like it's going to explode. I googled it and it said some coil was broken or something. Needless to say, I don't stand close enough to catch any shrapnel or radiation. :smoke:

  9. Yeah, I hear you. I used mine way too much for actual cooking - and then it died, and you know what we didn't miss it at all. Went without one for a good six months, then my Mom bought us one as a housewarming present.

I mean I used to heat up my refried beans for burritos in the microwave - hot pockets, everything.

Now I use the convection and I'm much happier (and stovetop for the beans!)

  10. I'm anti microwave... go me.

  11. Is there a goodwill or Ark thrift store near you, or some other second hand place? When our microwave died last year, there was no way I could cough up the cash for a new one, so I went to a thrift store and found the same model, hardly used at all, for like $10.

  12. unamerican :p

  13. I love standing in front of the microwave when it cooks. That way I can get cancer before I fatten myself up

  14. I'm very unamerican it's almost frightening.

  15. Never thought of buying a used one, I can afford to get a new one. It's just a hassle with this weather and not having a car (many NYC residents don't).

Even though I used to get other things in Salvation Army, and other thrift shops, we stopped shopping at those places because there's a bedbug epidemic in NYC - we had them in our apartment once already, they came from a neighbor's apt., and I'd be afraid to bring in something that they may be hiding in.

  16. looks like your chance for space travel is over

  17. Well there's a nice development - I just brought home a new GE M/W, it's the same size: 1.1 cubic feet, 1100 watts, and the guy only charged me 75 bucks, which included sales tax, because I paid cash.

When the weather is nicer, I may haul the broken Kenmore, still under waranty, back to Sears, or wherever it's supposed to go to, and if they fix it then I'll have a backup!

  18. Or you could cook twice the food in half the time

  19. Good suggestion! :hello:

  20. Microwave radiation is non-ionizing.
