Michigan MMJ patients, need your input for qualification

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by DigitalDwarf, Jan 20, 2010.

  1. A few years ago, I was run over by a truck that was probably going 40-45 mph. I broke a large number of bones in my leg and some others in my face. I have been living with what I think is "chronic pain" since that incident. Let me describe my pain. Some days I wake up and it hurts even to walk (mostly in my shin and knee area). When I exercise, I end up having to sit on the couch because my bone is literally aching. I can't afford to go to the doctor and really haven't had much documentation since the incident. I will take a Vicodin every so ofter, but that doesn't help much.

I found a site that describes it like this:

"Chronic pain: Pain (an unpleasant sense of discomfort) that persists or progresses over a long period of time. In contrast to acute pain that arises suddenly in response to a specific injury and is usually treatable, chronic pain persists over time and is often resistant to medical treatments.
Chronic pain may be related to a number of different medical conditions including (but not limited to) diabetes, arthritis, migraine, fibromyalgia, cancer, shingles, sciatica, and previous trauma or injury. Chronic pain may worsen in response to environmental and/or psychological factors."

I think my situation correlates with the above description quite well

Those with experience please let me know what you think. I hate being in pain all the time.

  2. I think the chronic pain you are experiencing would more than qualify you for medicinal in Michigan. The voters here decided to leave that determination up to doctors... not the State. So if you can find a doctor willing to provide certification that your suffering is a disorder causing chronic pain, you qualify. I may be able to help you find a doctor if your general practitioner lacks the compassion to grant you relief from your pain.

  3. Like the above poster said you should qualify.

The next step is getting it well documented. You will need a few trips to a regular doctor, who will probably want to do all kinds of expensive work-ups. I hope you have insurance.

The important thing is to document that you have chronic pain. Then ask the doctor you are seeing if they think marijuana might help with the pain. Maybe mention that you smoke recreation-ally and it seems to help. If you are lucky they will give you a recommendation.

If you are unlucky (which you probably will be) get copies of your last three visits (where you mentioned you chronic pain). Fax them to one of the MMJ friendly clinics here in Michigan. You will pay around $150-$$200 for a visit to the clinic to get your recommendation.

Get the forms from the Michigan Department of Community Health, send them $100 and you will get your card in about 90 days. If you start now you could be legal in about 6 months. It takes a bit of an effort here but I think it is well worth it.

  4. I don't know if this is against forum rules, but could you PM me some leads on doctors/clinics. I am on the west side of the state and I doubt my physician would even consider it.

    Thanks,

    DD

  5. I unfortunately don't have medical insurance, but I think my leg is covered for life because my car insurance was responsible for covering it.

  6. Bringing this back up to the top....

I thought a little more about my situation and my medical records, and these are things I can produce...

    1. X-Rays of my leg about 4 months after accident (with rods and pins - and a break of my fibula that they missed and never repaired it correctly
    2. Proof of about 5 months of Physical Therapy
    3. Doctor visits to surgeon, where I complained about aching pains

Does this seem like enough? I really don't have much money to do multiple doctor visits as I am unemployed at the moment/laid-off.

Here is another example of my problem. I jogged on the treadmill for about 9 minutes last night and my legs were in shambles. I popped a Vic. and felt nothing but neusea (sp?), which is what usually happens with me and pain killers.

Thanks for all your insights, guys and gals

    Cheers,

    DD

  7. Digital Dwarf,

Do you currently see a doctor for the leg pain? I see where you say you popped a vicodin, so I wondered if you had a current prescription. If so then you probably have the medical records you need. Do ask that doctor for a recommendation first, it could save you a visit to one of the high dollar clinics.

I hesitate to recommend this site, Michigan Medical Marijuana Association | News and Information for Michigan's medical marijuana patients and caregivers There is a lot of good information there but the forums are more of a flame zone than a patient friendly place. It does have links to several "pot" clinics though, some of which travel to our side of the state every once in awhile
