Message to all Canadians Regarding Bill C-51 (Mandatory Sentencing of Marijuana...)

Discussion in 'Marijuana Legalization' started by steez, Jun 10, 2009.

  1. We have been informed by the good folks at whyprohibition.ca that bill C-51, which would impose mandatory sentences on marijuana possession like that of the US, has indeed passed the House of Commons and without a fight, will soon pass the Senate and become law.

A few others and myself are working on setting up a meeting with our MP and urge you to do the same.

What we are looking for is solid research and statistics to back us up on why this is a flawed bill, such as the positive results of decriminalizing drugs like has been done in Portugal, the Netherlands and Mexico.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is exactly the opposite step that our country needs in our current economic state of turmoil, persay.

  2. Thanks for the heads-up. One of my best friends father is our local MP. Gonna be weird haha.

  3. I think that one of the articles about this Bill that I read said that 13 out of 16 key witnesses were full on against this Bill. It seems that the information against this has already been presented to them, and the Conservatives still feel this need to pass this. I sent letters to various MP's and cabinet members a while ago when I first heard of this Bill and received no responses back whatsoever. They are ignoring evidence and passing this Bill that is completely ideologically based.

Honestly I hate to say it, but I think this is too little, too late. It's as good as law now, the only thing we can do is wait for the next election and not give the Conservatives or the ridiculous sell-out Liberals our votes!

  4. I'd really like to think that it is not too late. There has been absolutely no media coverage of this to my knowledge, which is a great problem. All it will take is the voice of many Canadians to change this, I think it is still worth the initiative because the results of this bills will be oh so detrimental to our country's well-being.

  5. The two articles on this issue that I have posted in other threads I found originally in the newspaper, one on the front page and one on the 3rd page. They were in the Calgary Herald and the National Post. I have also seen multiple advertisments for the News at 7 and whatnot showing the story on this Bill (I don't watch the news so I'm not sure how much it was covered). It has been covered by the media more then most Bills that are pushed through.

Also, for the record I fully support what your doing, and am not trying to bring you down. I just feel that the only way to resolve this, because of how far it has come already, is with a change of government. I am sure that no other party would keep the laws that C-51 is changing. Thankfully with Harper running another minority government, it is only a matter of time before another vote of non-confidence is called (assuming Ignatieff grows a pair).

  6. That's a great find. There is so much in that video that I would like to comment on but my memory is far terrible to remember everything.

One thing that I am sort of confused about now though is that I read that this Bill takes out any say from a Judge on the sentencing...but the Conservative clearly explains that the minimum sentencing is only for growing with intent to sell and selling itself, and that there are circumstances when a plant could be considered personal use. Which then leads me to believe that this Bill was written fucking stupidly since there is no way 1 plant could be considered to be grown with any other intent then personal use.

I also liked how the Conservative guy (lol, really should have listened to their names) just shouted out "Now that propoganda!!" for no reason at all haha.

Atleast the NDP know whats up, but I believe that they have said that they are already in favour for legalization of cannabis. I am fairly decided that I will be voting NDP next election, although they do not have a chance where I live (Calgary, where Stephen Harper's constituency is). Alberta hasn't had a non-Conservative provincial government in something like 40 years and I believe that every constituency in Alberta except for one went to the conservatives last election.

  7. Wasn't C51 the natural foods/medicine banning act? I might be wrong.

That CTV video is great. The NDP are definitely telling the truth. The conservatives are laughable... we'll show you evidence, but later...

  8. yes you're right, C-51 was about banning natural foods/ health products (which i was also opposed to, anyone know if that bill was passed?).

But this is Bill C-15 not 51.

From the positions held in that video, my assessment was that the liberals are half and half in support, with the NDP not supporting it at all (kudos) and the conservatives supporting it to its fullest extent.

  9. Ok so I just got off the phone, and our stance has warrented us an interview with our MP, David Tilson. The interview is to be scheduled for next friday or the week after.

Now, if anyone can find legitimate and usuable statistics regng regarding how mandatory minimum sentences have failed in the US and how other methods, such as decriminalization, have worked in other countries, I would greatly appreciate it. This is not to say that I wont be doing research of my own.

  10. this is odd. the government in canada is trying to increase penalties for marijuana, meanwhile a court case is in the works to legalize all use. i wish the u.s. government could have this large of a difference of opinions flowing through it.

  11. The U.S is in the process of eliminating MMS. THEY'VE even realized that this bullshit doesn't work. They have in California and they are in New York currently. I don't know about anywhere else but I'm pretty sure there are other states.

  12. Do you have a source for this that I could refer to?

I believe it's credible, I mean Jodie Emery is the one saying it.

  14. I'm not doubting your credibility, I just wanted a source to refer to other than a forum post, get me? And that video link is not working for me unfortunately.

Awesome! We need all the help we can get. In my area we are in the midst of starting a protest of Bill C-15:

Login | Facebook (that's the link to the protest's facebook page)

We've spoken to Jodie Emery, Marc Emery's wife, and they have agreed to come make a stop in Orangeville, Ontario as a part of Marc's Farewell Tour and partake in the events with us if we can raise $1300 as well as produce a legitimate sized crowd!

If we could get numerous protests going in other provinces, I'm sure we would have a significant impact on the passing of this bill in the senate!

  17. I hear that if you get caught with up to 200 plants it is a year mandatory but if you are taking a few good buds to make some hash butter you get two years mandatory. Thats fucking bullshit. It just shows you how misinformed the people that are pushing this shit are and makes you wonder what their agenda really is. I think the DEA and the big time dealers that are in with them are trying to get a foothold in Canada.
