I was wondering if anyone knows how to do it cause iI thought it would be cool to start and what does it exactly do for you.
Well, I don't know that much about it. But I do know this one method. Just relax on your bed, make sure your lying down flat, and just breath in and out. And keep your mind clear. Everytime you start thinking about something, don't try to get rid of the thought.. accept the thought and just let it pass. And of course keep your eyes closed. Do that 20 minutes a night and you should feel a different in everyday life.. although i've never been able to keep up with 20 minutes a night.
Erowid's got a huge section about meditation. http://www.erowid.org/spirit/meditation/meditation.shtml
to meditate, in my opinion , is to be watchfull to the mecanism that go on /inside/ you head. you feel "something", how d you react to it in your head, how do you decide to cope with the feeling or deal with it, or let it out uncontroled. meditation allows you to actually control the way a stimuli has an impact on you. may the stimuli be pain, suffering, love, lust, hunger, anger, hatred, whatever. The objective being to not have any impact, being in control at all times. .... as to the how, buddhist have been devising methods for 2500 years. there are as many technics as humans beings. read here and there, but find your own.
what i'm confused about is teh line between thought and meditating, is meditating anti-thought? uber thought? how do you know when you have moved from conscious thought to a meditative state? do i even make sense? if any of these questions can be answered or pointed out how they make little sense i would be very greatful cheers, moogle
i follow natural mystics way of meditating only sitting straight up not slouching and in half-lotus position (indian style) and eventually after i've focused on my breathing and no thoughts are traveling through my head I get some pretty weird feelings its almost like being high its just not as foggy and you cant leave your posistion or concentrate on anything outside of your own mind and dont think to hard or strain your self. After you reached this point a couple times try when you high it can make for some very interesting experiences and i stress the very. Ciao
See how long you can think about nothing at all, it's easier with your eyes closed. I can kinda detach my consciousness from my brain, if I'm saying that right, and totally clear it for a good while. I never tried extended periods of time though, but I think it's a good way to have a rest for your mind while you're awake.
Meditation itself can be very useful... but also kind of hard to do at first. I just try to only think about my breathing, although it's not always possible. My mother taught me a different kind of meditation when I was young (and for those of you that have read The Giver, you will laugh...). Maybe it would be more of creative visualization. Anyway, she would tuck me in and sit on my bed and have me close my eyes and she'd start describing somewhere. For a few weeks she did this (because I have always had trouble falling asleep), and then I started doing it myself. After doing that for years, when I started trying to actually meditate, it was a lot easier for me.
