Muscle Spasms medical M makes back pain much worse

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by lamehack, Nov 28, 2021.

  1. in my 40's, having lower back pain on and off. couple herniations which all healed. I am not considering (and probably never will) any surgical interventions. physical therapy and other alternatives have been helpful.
Now following intense gym workouts (not on lower back specifically) I experienced a low-grade back pain.
I tried indica based (10mg thc) edibles, WYLD brand. initially it felt like they are helping a bit, but then couple days in, I experienced a very bad low back muscle spasm (while on MM). I kept taking MM daily, around 10-20mg indica based THC + some CBD. my pain was very low in the morning, but the moment I took MM around 1-2pm, within 2 hours it shot from a 1-2 to a 7-8. I had to take 100mg tramadol to control it. the pattern repeated for 4 days. low pain AM, within 1-2 hours of taking it, shot up to 7-8. another tramadol (low grade narcotic). then the next 2 days, I took no marijuana at all. my pain levels remained very low throughout the entire day (although the evening was very slightly worse, i'd say from 1-2 to a 2-3). my conclusion:
MM does makes my back pain much worse. I am not sure why, but I found similar stories online. I am not against MM at all. I prob keep using it in the future once this resolves, for other issues. but it is doing something bad here. Can't put my finger on it, but I get a sense that it messes with muscle signaling and the back gets out of whack. maybe it 'relaxes' the muscles, in a time where some tension is needed, or it tenses them up. I am not 100% sure. Reading there is some science that it also messes with CB1 receptors, and sometimes then can cause paradoxical effects.
anybody here noticed a similar pattern? Am I doing something wrong?

  2. That sucks sorry to hear that. I don't have chronic back problems but my back has been hurting the past couple days and literally just smoked for the first time in that time and it definitely is helping. I'd definitely suggest indicas and experimenting with different cannabinoids. Sort of sounds like you've tried that though so maybe cannabis isn't the right treatment for you.

I don't know anything about topicals but maybe give those a shot.

  3. Cannabis is by no means a Cure-All and results can vary wildly between users and issues. For Example it usually amplifies Tooth-Oral pain.

  4. Sorry- I’m with you. If I get to high I have pretty intense back pain. I haven’t found anything that helps me yet.

  5. Sometimes cannabis can make any feelings you have more intense, so if you have pain you feel it more. Same reason you might enjoy music more when indulging, it heightens awareness.

I've had four operations on my lower back so unfortunately I know a little about short and long term back pain.

The intense initial pain from an operation wasn't helped a lot when using cannabis. Opioids, and then, over the counter pain meds worked better for me at that time. But the long term nerve pain that comes with a bad back was basically eliminated. And now when my back is sore for whatever reason, I use a cannabis muscle rub, a hot shower, and a relaxing edible and they work well.

  7. Helping with nerve pain was a huge thing for me. The pain made it difficult to walk or be on my feet for very long. My Dr put me on 3 different drugs for nerve pain. The last worked if you took enough, but at that rate you also felt mentally off.

I stopped taking the prescriptions and lived with it until I started using cannabis. Then it gradually disappeared unless I overdo it somehow, but I'm normally good.

Cannabis is the only thing that really worked on nerve pain for me. I'm a believer, lol.

  8. oh my gosh i know what you mean im 22 and i have chronic myofacial muscle problems i would say i have gone through a fair amount of weed that make me feel more discomfort than relief and to my surprise that includes CBD oil as well, it did the opposite of helping my muscle pain!!! BUT I am curently on the hunt for a strain i sadly dont remember what it was that i smoked but it was the only time ive smoked and got amazing results. If i ever find it i will let you know!

Have you tried pilates? a less known cause of musculoskeletal pain is muscle imbalnces! (they often develop over time due to habits) and compensations due to old injuries which also causes musle Imbalance and causes further pain because youre body is out of its natural alignment, this not only puts pressure on joints, muscles ligaments and nerves but internal organs as well! other than pilates (which can fix these imbalances), i suggest making sure youre getting all your nutrients eg the omegas 3,6 and 9, DHA etcetera, try to minimise any activites in which you are putting pressure on your back like lifting, always stretch and fix your muscle imbalnces before you do weight training exercises.
