MBM tincture

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by Bdougu444, May 3, 2019.

  1. Hi, i used the magic butter machine to make a picture. I used 7grams of about 9 month old weed, a little dried, with 2 cups of ever clear. I ran the machine for 4 hours at instructed setting and it didn't work. Any ideas why I failed? Should I have decarbed the weed first?

    Thanks

  2. Yes, you should've decarbed first, and it won't be psychoactive without decarb.
Also, you'll get a very weak tincture using less than a couple oz flower in MBM.
    For 15% herb,
    Potency ~ (4000 mg herb)*(0.15)/(473 mL) = 1.3 mg/mL
    1 tablespoon = (1.3 mg/mL)*(15 mL) = 19 mg thc
The only method to decarb that I know of at this point is to evaporate off all the alcohol, then decarb.
But that wastes expensive fluid unless you have a distiller.

  3. Ok thanks. I've read instructions that say you can use as little as 7 grams and 2 cups of everclear minimum, is this wrong?

  4. 7 grams PER cup with a 2 cup minimum.

  5. That's a very weak tincture. Sure you can use as little as 7 grams, but it's not gonna be strong.

  6. Thanks. So what do you think the minimum should be?

How strong do you want your tincture? Use bkarnaze's calculations to figure it out. Or tell us how strong and we'll help you with the math. Using an ounce would give you
    28 X 1000= 28000 X 15%= 4200 mg/ 480 ml= 8.75 ml/ml. I think that's still a weak tincture and would use two ounces bud to that much alcohol. Are you using a high proof alcohol like Everclear?

  8. That’s what directions say, and I find to be accurate.

Wild Bill, I'm confused by your numbers. He used 7 grams which would be 7000 X 15% = 1000 mg/ 480= 2 mg/ ml. I may have my numbers mixed up. I agree OP needs at least two ounces for a decent tincture unless he reduces. OP you can take the tincture you made and reduce it by evaporation or low heat to 30 ml which would give you 1000 mg/ 30 ml= 33 mg/ml. A nice potent tincture. Typically most of us would reduce the tincture appreciably as it takes more alcohol to process the cannabis than you want in your final batch. Oh, yes you need to decarb 240F for 40 minutes.

  10. Thanks, this is very helpful and the math is making a little more sense now! Yes, I am using Everclear.

Let me ask the question another way as I am not 100% on the math. How strong would I need for 5 drops of tincture = 10 mg of thc?

  11. Thanks. So, since I didn't decarb first am I screwed on this batch? Or can I still evaporate to 30 ml then decarb as was suggested by bkarnaze?

  12. Thanks. So I can still decarb the liquid after evaporating the alcohol?

Oh, mate, can't help you there. Droppers don't all make the same size drops. That would be very concentrated. You would need to count the drops necessary to give you 1/2 or 1/4 ml which at 7 grams/30 ml= 33 mg/ ml. 1/4 ml would be 8.25 mg. , pretty close to 10 mg, but no idea of drops needed for 1/4 ml. Should be easy to calculate, especially if your dropper is marked at 1/4, 1/2, 1 ml.

  14. You're pretty screwed if you didn't decarb (maybe, everyone has an opinion). However- your tincture will naturally decarb over four months. Put this bottle in a dark place and wait four months. Then make a fresh batch that you decarb.

  15. To decarb now you would need to evaporate down to oil then decarb at 240F until all bubbling stops. Not very practical and a huge cost in alcohol. Better to put that bottle aside for four months and let it decarb naturally.

  16. Makes sense (well your answer not my question) thanks.

    So if I use 2 oz of flowers with 2 cups of Everclear I would get : 52,000 mg * .15 = 7,800 mg / 473 ml= 16.5 mg of thc per ml?

If correct would you consider that a potent tincture?

  17. oops!
    I used 4 g instead of 7 g.
    Thanks for catching that.
My answers should be multiplied by 7/4 = 1.75 to be correct for 7 g.

  18. Two ounces equals 56 grams, or 56000 X 15%= 8400/480= 17.5 mg/ml. That would be potent for some folks. I like 100 mg, so for me that would not be concentrated enough. Remember you can reduce your volume by natural evaporation, or low heat. Those same two cups of tincture reduced to a volume of one cup would be twice as strong. Reduced to two ounces of tincture would yield 140 mg/ ml, much too potent to dispense in anything but drops. That would be a kick ass, be careful strength and I would not recommend reducing that much. Perhaps leave it as it is until you try it and determine if you want it stronger. Good luck with it- alchemy is great fun!
