Max Stirner The Unique and Its Property

Discussion in 'Philosophy' started by lpr, Aug 29, 2019.

  1. Who else fucks with Stirner?
Stirner the only philosopher who kept my attention and made me laugh while changing the way I view the world.

  2. I was a big fan of his philosophy for years. His idea of the "self" being a "creative nothing" was definitely revolutionary in western thought. And his takedown of Hegelian logic and contemporary humanism, by showing how it was basically just Christian ethics in new clothes, is pretty impressive too. Considering how close in thought he was to Nietzsche (especially given that he wrote his stuff several generations before him) its criminal how he's constantly left out of discussions on existentialism

  3. Agreed. I’m reading The German Ideology now and Marx is trying his best to smash Saint Max. I understand after Marx read Stirner he went from an idealist to materialist perspective.

  4. I haven't read The German Ideology but from what I've been told it's little more than petty name calling--Marx calling Stirner a bourgeois and an individualist.

Engels, however, who was a nicer, more open-minded, though less talented man than Marx, was quite positive about Stirner's book, calling him "king Stirner" or "wise Stirner" or something like that.

  5. Marx calls Stirner Saint Max and Jacques le bonhomme throughout. I am far more into Engles and Stirner philosophy than I am Marx, but that I do agree with Marx economic analysis.
