  1. Can marijuana stop cancer? - San Francisco Health News | Examiner.com

In what looks to be a breakthrough discovery, scientists at San Francisco's California Pacific Medical Center have found that a compound derived from marijuana might halt the spread of many kinds of aggressive cancer. The discovery has the potential to radically change the face of the disease and its treatment. The finding is the result of 20 years of research into cancer and cannabis by researchers Pierre Desprez, and Sean McAllister.

Desprez, a molecular biologist, spent two decades studying ID-1, the gene that makes cancer to spread to other cells. During that time, McAllister was focused on studying the properties of Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-toxic, non-psychoactive chemical compound found in the cannabis plant.
Several years ago, the two began to collaborate in an experiment that combined CBD with cells containing high levels of ID-1 in a petri dish. Under normal circumstances, without the presence of CBD, the cells would reproduce, and spread the ID-1.

However, the pair found that the presence of the CBD caused the cells to stop spreading and to return to normal.
"What we found was that...Cannabidiol could essentially 'turn off' the ID-1," Desprez told The Huffington Post.
Since publishing their original finding in 2007, Desprez and McAllister have shown in experiments that CBD has the same effect on breast cancer cells in animals.
And now, in an even more promising discovery, they have found that "Cannabidiol works with many kinds of aggressive cancers--brain, prostate--any kind in which these high levels of ID-1 are present," says Desperez.
The team hopes to begin clinical trials immediately, so stay tuned to see how cancer treatment may be changed by this discovery.

  2. That is only PART of the story!

Marijuana compound could stop aggressive cancer metastasis Marijuana compound could stop aggressive cancer metastasis - Yahoo! News India

London, Sept 21 (ANI): A compound found in cannabis could halt the spread of many forms of aggressive cancer, scientists have claimed.

Researchers found that the compound, called cannabidiol, had the ability to "switch off" the gene responsible for metastasis in an aggressive form of breast cancer, the Daily Mail reported.

Importantly, this substance does not produce the psychoactive properties of the cannabis plant.

The team from the California Pacific Medical Center, in San Francisco, first spotted its potential five years ago, after it stopped the proliferation of human breast cancer cells in the lab, the report said.

Last year, they published a study that found a similar effect in mice.
Now, they say they are on the verge of publishing further animal study results that expand these results further.

"The preclinical trial data is very strong, and there's no toxicity. There's really a lot or research to move ahead with and to get people excited," study co-leader Dr Sean McAllister, told to the San Francisco Chronicle.

While he, along with colleague Dr Pierre Desprez acknowledge that they are some way off from turning their finding into a pill, they are already developing human trial models.

They hope to eventually test the drug in combination with current chemotherapies.

Professor Desprez had previously found that a protein called ID-1 seemed to play a role in causing breast cancer to spread.

Meanwhile, Dr McAllister had discovered the cannabidiol had anti-cancer potential.

The pair teamed up to see if they could treat a particularly aggressive form of breast cancer called "triple negative."

This form, which affects 15 percent of patients, doesn't have three hormone receptors that the most successful therapies target. Cells from this cancer have high levels of ID-1.

When they exposed cells from this cancer to cannabidiol they were shocked to find the cells not only stopped acting "crazy" but also returned to a healthy normal state.

They discovered that the compound had turned off the overexpression of ID-1, stopping them from travelling to distant tissues.

Other potentially treatable cancers are forms of leukaemia, lung, ovarian and brain cancers, which also have high levels of ID-1. (ANI)

The cancer cells RETURNED TO A HEALTHY NORMAL STATE!   The cancer cells were CURED, not killed! (Think about that for a bit!)

OK guys, this should go to all of your female relatives! One out of every eight women will get breast cancer during their lives! That means it is very likely that your mother, sister, a cousin, or a niece will be struck by it.

CBD is not like THC. It will NOT get you "high" no matter how much is taken! Be sure they know this- fear of the cannabis high should not be a reason for women to reject this treatment!

  3. Absolutely! I'm not stopping until my mum is on it, in tea or vape or oil for cooking:smoke:

  4. Misleading title. Marijuana DOES cure cancer

  5. yeah but I'm just repeating the article title for objectivity's sake.

  6. I think it would be a great step forward for the United States, but damn it would suck if a dispensary would only sell CBD medicine. THC is fantastic :p

Exotic. don't worry! THC is also VERY useful! It compliments the breast cancer fighting ability of CBD.

The ONLY place you can find CBD rich strains like Harlequin is at dispensaries- and they are being RAIDED!

The dispensary I use was raided last week. The DEA (like thieves) broke in during the night. All of their cannabis, their computers, security cameras, all the money-just about everything of value was taken. Clones were destroyed and thrown on the floor. Papers were strewn about- in general the DEA trashed the place. (They cleaned up and put their own private stash on the shelves and reopened that day! :hello: )

Where will the women of my community get their CBD cannabis now? Every raid can KILL a woman with breast cancer! The weeks before the next crop can make the difference between life and death for some of them!

One of my co-workers has breast cancer. As soon as I track down her address, she is getting this article! (No, she doesn't know I'm "Granny") She will get an envelope with no return address- just articles about cannabis and cancer! :D

For the sake of your mother, sisters and girlfriends, become an activist! :yay:

I am having a BLAST! I have been making comments in the online news! And am I ever getting "thumbs ups" and replies! I even have a die-hard prohib who is calling us "junkies". I LOVE it when I get an idiot like that! He comes off as a ranter, and I post up readable titles of MMJ studies! :devious:

Look what has been going on in just the last 3 hours! It has been like this ALL DAY! :yay:

Each of those is either a vote for cannabis, or an opportunity to convert a prohibitionist! :D

Dudes, you want to make a difference? Get busy! COMMENT! :hello: This is one heck of an opportunity! USE IT!

  9. yeah, i think so , it would be a great step forward for the United States, but damn it would suck if a dispensary would only sell CBD medicine.[IMG]

  10. abc, there is NO chance of that happening! THC is also quite useful medically! Did you even read post #9?

Anyway, THC and CBD are NOT interchangeable in killing cancer, or any other endocannabinoid related function!

THC works to stop cancer (and other conditions) in a totally different way than CBD! They don't even activate the same receptors!

In breast cancer, you might think of CBD as a bomb, while THC is a bullet- both kill, but one is more effective at killing than the other! In other conditions, THC is the bomb!

And the only place you will ever find high CBD cannabis is in a dispensary! Dealers won't carry "can't get you high" medical marijuana! But dispensaries will always carry high THC cannabis.

  12. I know that many people will take exception to this, but these are generalized statements that have not been proved.

Fact: Cannabinoids have shown enormous potential in the treatment of cancer. This is demonstrated in many peer reviewed studies.

What has not been demonstrated in peer reviewed studies is the claim that marijuana cures cancer.

Inducing cancer cells to die, or to return to "normal activity" does not amount to "curing cancer". Cancer is a whole disease process, and curing it often involves much more than just getting the cancer cells to die.

What is clear to me, and should be made clear to everyone in the world, is that in light of all of the evidence of the potential for cannabinoids to treat cancer, blocking further research is INSANE.

I feel we are very close to having the legal restrictions on medical cannabis research lifted.

  13. So my dad has been diagnosed with lung cancer. We live in CT and medical marijuana has become legal yesterday, October first. I'm reading that cannabis oil can possibly cure cancer. What happens if my dad's oncologist isn't on board or CT doesn't have cannabis oil. I'll do anything to get this oil to ensure he can beat cancer...can someone please help

  14. There are canna-oil recipes on here - pretty much everything you need to know is on here, lots of help. Try a search for 'cannabis oil' and you'll find what you need.

  15. I've read several places to make the oil. However, I'm afraid I won't do it right and it can be very costly to do so. I'm looking for someone to point me in the right direction to obtain it somewhere. Thank you for your response however

  16. I'm so sorry to hear about your dad's condition! :(

But don't worry, there's always hope! [IMG]

    If you need help making medical grade oil, these links/tutorials should get you going;

BadKat's Highly Activated & Bioavailable, Med-Grade Hash Oil (starting with dry-sift hash, same as capsule recipe,
oil can also be used for cooking)

    Med-Grade Hash Oil

Those links will bring you to the CannaPharm sticky in the edibles section, my blog also has a 'Table of Contents' with individual links which can guide you to the different recipes. The oils and tinctures can be eaten, sipped in drinks, used topically, and not all, but several can even be smoked or vaped :)

I would strongly suggest finding a vaporizer as well, for the near/direct-contact with the affected areas.

    Good luck!

  17. Granny just thought i would give you a personal shout out thumbs up. My parents despise marijuana but you always make me remember and keep trying so that maybe one day i can convince my parents otherwise. Thanks for all you contributions here the community really appreciates the wealth of knowledge you add to grasscity its people like you that will maybe one day make this thing legal!

  18. unless there is a mmj shop near you that has canna-oil - no-one can tell you where to get it or offer it to you. you will probably have to make it.

  19. Before reading about the oil or even opening up this thread, I was thinking of the Rick Simpson run from the cure thing. As in we already know marijuana kills cancer cells. Other studies have said so as well. Too bad so many people don't know the facts. I don't have much hope. My mom is a nurse and seems to dislike my marijuana usage more than me smoking cigarettes.

  20. lol wasn't it revealed just a few weeks ago by 'studies' that marijuana causes ball cancer?
