"Marijuana kills brain cells"

Discussion in 'Seasoned Marijuana Users' started by hockeyman07, Jan 20, 2010.

  1. We have all heard this said. This slogan was first released (along with "this is your brain on drugs") when the Nixon era of War on Drugs started. I would like to clear this up, scientifically, because most of us know this is not true. This is taken directly from the study and a current one:

An early study reported brain damage in rhesus monkeys after six months exposure to high concentrations of marijuana smoke. The rhesus monkeys had oxygen mask attached to them and were pumped with smoke from about 15-20 cannabis joints in an hour, for 12 hours straight. This is when the government concluded that Marijuana killed brain cells. What killed the cells in the monkeys is the lack of oxygen. In a recent, more carefully conducted study, researchers found no evidence of brain abnormality in monkeys that were forced to inhale the equivalent of four to five marijuana cigarettes every day for a year.

So, we have heard teachers, parents, friends say it. I heard about the studies Nixon conducted where he found this, and that's the truth!
