Marijuana and sleep

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by firstgrow, May 3, 2007.

  1. Ive never seen a doctor about my troubled sleeping, but I smoke every night before I go to sleep and have for someodd years and it does the trick every time. I just dont want a doc to up and say, well I know this pill will work....I dont want to take any pills..and pills at all.. Reefers natural

  2. Ive been suffering from pretty bad insomnia, depression, and anxiety. Ive been tryed on multiple types of pills. recently ive been takin off my sleeping pills because they dont do a dam thing. and i explained that to my doc. i also explained i smoke pot to fall asleep and it works perfectly. He explained to me some bush league side effects..but than never really made a huge deal about it. He took me off the pills? gave me nothing? But i guess maybe that was his way of saying..just keep smokin the herb! lmao

  3. dont do it before but, it messes with REM sleep and without REM sleep you get all fucked up

  4. I use it throughout the night a few days after chemotherapy, as the nausea wakes me if I'm not "medicated".... I usually have a big bong load 20-30 minutes before I plan to sleep, then once I'm ready for bed I'll pack a bowl for when the nausea wakes me up so I can get back to bed faster... Works better than the promethazine they had prescribed me and I feel a lot safer knowing if I need to wake up for something, the only thing I am is really high, not a sleeping zombie... After the post treatment nausea wears off though, I quit smoking before bed, because I sleep with no problem after that. Why waste the herb?

    .

  6. It doesn't totally destroy REM sleep. It just depresses it a bit and is the reason why increased dreams occur when you go on a T-break.

  7. Man that was absolutely beautiful. I hear ya.

  8. This statement about alcohol is false.

  9. That is quite possibly the coolest marijuana related story I've heard.

Rock on Dr. Dave and those like you!

The human condition, coming FIRST for a Doctor, even at possibly the cost of his job?
    /salute salute salute

  10. I think it is. Its a kinda lengthy experience, but I'll shorten it as much as I can without leaving out important info.
*Note: the marijuana aspect of this comes later in the story.
My friend is prescribed Vyvanse for her ADHD. She gives them to me for $1/pill, 50mg each. I had been up for three nights and this occured on the fourth. I also had 2mg of Xanax in my system, I took those on the third night to try to sleep, it didn't work for that but I was fucked up in a different aspect. On the fourth day, I was desperate to get my hands on good ole' MJ to get me to sleep. I was delirious. Hallucinations. Hearing things. Getting agitated easily over the small things. I got a hookup, which may have been one of the hardest things I've ever done. It seemed like everything was against me. I got a single joint, which was pretty fat and tight. It was the prettiest thing I had seen in a long time. I wish I knew what kind of weed was in it, probably Hydro or Kush from my experiences. I smoked about half of it, maybe a little less. I decided to stay awake until the period of being exhausted rolled around so I could enjoy my high and my money well spent. Sike, I got my joint for free. :)
Anyways, I did just that. I laid in my bed watching tv, eating, drinking, and being high. When I became tired, I smoked my "before bed" cigarette, turned my tv down, and went right to sleep. It was amazing, and I'm about to smoke the other half and go to sleep.

  11. I think its alright...

Many fine, upstanding, responsible Americans, who have jobs and raise kids, use marijuana. Some couples use it believing it enhances sex. Sick people use it to fight nausea and increase appetite. And insomniacs use it for sleep.

If the old man were a pothead, smoking all day long, I'd say that's a bad thing. But as far as we can tell, light users don't seem to have medical problems; yet I can't advise the use an illegal drug. That would be inappropriate.

Based on medicine rather than on moral pharmacology, your son should be more concerned if he came home to find dad is a regular user of any of a number of prescription sleeping pills normally. :D

  12. Yeah, i used to burn years back. I recently went (and are still going through) a very anxious stage of minor depression. The anxiety tends to be with me all day off and on. Of an evening i am now smoking to help take my mind of things, and for the fact i cant seem to shut my mind of. Sounds like a complete contradiction, but it really helps me sleep.

  13. One theory is that cannabis thins the boundary between your unconscious/conscious mind so your waking hours are more "Dream-like". Well at least that is how i see it, but i've also had some amazing dreams while stoned. Only problem with habitual smoking is when you exercise , you sweat out THC from your fat, so like it or not you will be somewhat buzzing :):hello:

  14. I do that too, it really helps me get to sleep :smoke:

  15. I'm autistic, without a little marijuana, or a melatonin supplement, I just can't sleep.

  16. any strain suggestion? this is the reason why i got my card for a bad case of insomnia and anxiety i was gonna try white widow because its potency but now when i research aboutit they say its more of an upper energizing effect.

  17. I have considered the use of marijuana to help my sleep, but researching the topic, I have concluded that it could have the opposite of the desired effect. Complete sleep that includes all of sleep's stages is so important to good health of the body and brain. Please consider the following quote from an article at A Hidden Effect of Marijuana Use that describes the sleep cycle and marijuana's effect on it.

This article explores just one of the many areas of functioning that marijuana can affect in users: the human sleep cycle. Marijuana's impact on the sleep cycle can produce both acute and chronic effects on a person's functioning. This offers a partial physiological explanation for some of the reported effects of marijuana use.

A brief overview of the human sleep cycle and its importance in terms of daily functioning is in order. Humans sleep in five different stages, differentiated primarily by brain wave patterns measured by electroencephalography (EEG). Just prior to falling asleep, the typical person is in a relaxed state of consciousness characterized by alpha waves (a frequency of 8 to 12 waves per second). After the person falls asleep, phase one of the sleep cycle begins, during which brain activity is still fairly high but declining. When a person reaches stage two, brain waves become slower. The third and fourth stages of sleep are known as slow-wave sleep. During SWS, heart rate, breathing rate, and brain activity slow down and the percentage of slow, large-amplitude waves increases. After stage four, a person cycles back through stages three and two. However, instead of returning to stage one, the person enters a stage of sleep known as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.
REM sleep (also known as “paradoxical sleep”) is characterized by irregular, low-voltage fast brain waves. Despite this considerable degree of brain activity, the postural muscles of the body are more relaxed at this stage of sleep than at any other stage. Dreams are more vivid, intricate, and somewhat more frequent during this stage. Short-term memory is consolidated into long-term memory. Since muscles are most relaxed during REM sleep, the body shifts its resources to the task of repairing tissues and cells-a vital task of the immune system.4,5

Since the 1970s, several studies have examined the effect of THC (the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana) on SWS and REM sleep stages. Researchers have demonstrated that THC ingestion decreases SWS and REM sleep, and has sometimes been found to eliminate REM sleep altogether in rats, rabbits, and cats.6,7,8,9 In later research, the same effect was observed in humans in controlled studies, with the added finding that sleep cycles did not return to normal until after about one week of abstinence.10,11 Difficulty falling and staying asleep and restlessness were noted in three studies a few days after abstinence for people who smoked marijuana and for people who orally ingested THC.

  18. I toke every night before bed when i can, puts me to sleep perfectly, puts mind at ease and relaxes my whole body, it works for me, im sure it depends on the person though.
