Marijuana and religion?

Discussion in 'Seasoned Marijuana Users' started by Fleeble123, Mar 6, 2010.

  1. HI, I'm new to grass city per se (i've been reading alot of what's on here) and I'm interested in hearing your views on Marijuana and religion/god

The reason I'm asking is because my dad recently called me out saying that weed goes against my religion (christianity, which i follow lightly) and these were his points.

    Ruins your drive
Goes against your relationship with god
    Will ruin my life

So I'm just curious as to what your guys have to say.

  2. On the contrary, Cannabis is a gift from God.
If you are spiritual at all smoking Cannabis will bring you closer to your God.

  3. I'd say that God probably doesn't want us to light plants on fire and then inhale their smoke, but points 1 and 3 are bullshit.

It's all about willpower, really. Smoke a couple bowls, wait for the high to wear off, and then go about your business, whatever that may be (school, work, etc.) This will ensure that what your dad is talking about is false.

I'm a former fundamentalist preacher (among other things :))...the problem with playing the religion card is that different religions will interpret the bible to say pretty much whatever they want. But here's what you can say for sure:

Cannabis is not mentioned in the bible, so there is no prohibition against it specifically.

Smoking was unknown in the middle east prior to the new world being discovered, so there is nothing in the bible about smoking anything.

The closest substance to cannabis that IS mentioned in the bible is alcohol. Drinking alcohol was generally accepted in both new testament and old testament times. Drunkeness, and doing stupid things because you're drunk was not. Most of the prohibitions against alcohol in the bible are against drunkenness and alcoholism. Some super-fundie holiness sects, like baptists, assemblies of god, pentacostals, (think Pat Robertson, Oral Roberts, Jimmy Swaggart) twist the bible around to claim that Jesus did not drink alcohol and that the word for "wine" in the new testament refers to grape juice. This is patently untrue, but if this happens to be what your father believes then you have a problem. These same sects generalize alcohol to weed and prohibit weed on that basis alone. The truth is that Jesus demonstrably did drink wine and provide wine to other people.

The bible says that you should not do things that hurt your own body. A lot of people use this as a prohibition against drugs, sex, anything that they can remotely say hurts your body. The truth is, weed hurts your body a lot less than a lot of things any holy roller does every day.

The losing your motivation thing is a stretch. The bible says that you should be diligent in doing the work of the lord and nothing should get in the way of that. If you're that bought into it, then anything that gets in the way of that you should stop. If you're not, then you already aren't doing this, so weed is not going to make it any different. The apostle Paul said that people that are serious about serving god should not get married, but he also said that wasn't a hard and fast rule. He said similar things about alcohol and I suspect he'd say the same about weed.

Here's the thing that your dad does have over you, though: weed is illegal. The bible says to observe the laws of the land. The fact is, though, most people break several laws a day, and if your dad wants to go to the mat over this one then you should remind him of it every time he drives over the speed limit or rolls through a stop sign.

When I get someone laying this kind of trip on me, I usually pick something about them that I know will hit home and hit them back with it. Last time I had that conversation with a woman, she was saying "oh those poor homosexuals, they're all going to go to hell." I asked her why, and she said that god condemns it. I said, "well, you're fat and the bible condemns gluttony many more times than it does buttfucking, so I think you have your own problems to worry about. If homosexuals are going to hell for breaking god's laws, then so are you."

You can take this tack with your Dad, and if you got brass balls, you can hit him hard enough that he'll get off your back about this stuff. If it gets bad enough, play the masturbation card. "Dad, what does christianity say about masturbation?" "So, Dad, do you masturbate? Is that worse than smoking pot?" You trot this one out, I just about guarantee you he won't hassle you again, especially if mom is anywhere around. Because one thing that two millenia of christianity has never been able to stamp out is jacking off, and I guarantee your dad is no exception to this.

The apostle Paul said "all things are legal but not all things are profitable." He demonstrated many times that he did not believe that christianity revolved around keeping gods "laws" like judaism did, but rather faith in christ redeemed you from the inside and once you had that relationship there was no law to follow other than the ones Jesus laid down: Love god above all else and love your neighbor as yourself. In other words: if it doesn't hurt anyone then it's cool.

But I will tell you this as well: once I got free from the brainwashing of fundie christians I really started looking into doctrine. If you choose to continue to be a bible believing christian then you would do well to scrutinize the book. There are many things taught today in christianity that do not exist in the bible at all. Eternal punishment, heaven, hell, all those things are merely carrots and sticks that others use to control you. They are things that men have made up to get and keep power.

The thing you have to remember, though, is that it's important that YOU make YOURSELF comfortable with your own concept of the religion. It's not for someone else to dictate, and people will use religion for non-religious purposes as your dad is. He's using it as leverage to get you to stop sometihng that he doesn't agree with. That is 100% contrary to Jesus's teaching. Jesus loved everyone but the people that he came down hard on were hypocrites who used religion to further their own ends. Ask your dad to look up the term "whited sepulchres" in the bible.

  5. "Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs." (Genesis 9:3, NKJV).

as long as you dont put it first in your life there is no harm.

  6. This^^

could use some citations though ;)

  7. if god existed? idk

your god but the erb on this planet

  8. Man made liquor
    God made pot
    Weed is illegal
    Alcohol's not

Point out to him that it has a tradition of use going back MILLENIA (they found buds buried with mummies. Hindus smoke it (bhangra) yearly to worship Shiva.)

It does not intoxicate you to the same extent as alcohol. In fact, in (I think Sufi) Islam, alchohol is forbidden as a bad intoxicant, but cannabis and coffee are ok. (And Islam is basically Christianity plus one extra testament from Mohammed).

It might ruin your life, but it won't ruin it the same way a cocaine habit or alcoholism would. Its biggest danger is that overuse won't really do anything, so you might waste a lot of time and money on it. And if it weren't for prohibition, you probably wouldn't have to spend so much on it, wouldn't have to interact with dealers (who might have harder drugs to push on you) and you wouldn't have to hide from people and the cops.

Just make sure you never lose sight of what you want to do with your life, that you don't become the lazy stoner (the stereotype isn't ALL bullshit... smoking a lot most likely will make you very lazy). Don't let it get in the way of family, relationships, your career, studies, etc.

I guess the real question is how much does your dad really know about weed? If he still believes the propaganda of the Reagan era, and thinks it's a deadly narcotic drug, you probably just need to get him some proper info on how safe the stuff really is. If he already knows all that and still takes a religiously-rooted anti-weed stance, the you have a real tough case on your hands.

Good luck man, link him to NORML or LEAP or SAFER or SSDP or something. They all have good info.

  9. I believe that marijuana and other psychoactive plants contain ancient and cosmic intelligence to aid people and to help us evolve.

    Marijuana is my holy communion.

  10. I'll be as simple as possible.
If our lord didn't want us smoking pot, he wouldn't have created it...

  11. This is a pretty bad argument. You could also say if god didn't want us smoking poison ivy he wouldn't have created it.

But on another note i find most religions to be bullshit. Especially christianity just because of the culture that surrounds it.

My views on god are that god is the universe. The universe is the all powerful thing. It doesn't have a conscience though, and we are all linked and in a way immortal because we are part of the cycle of energy. We just change forms, even though i think we most likely lose our conscience.

Psychedelics have played a big role in a lot of my views. Weed can only go so far IMO.

  12. If God didn't want you to smoke it why did he put it there?

And if he says the Devil put it there question the omnipotence of a God who can't just get rid of it then.

  13. If God exists, then he was responsible for making marijuana plants.

Now on 2/3 of the points your father said, that's just propaganda really. People think that smoking weed will make them lazy and they won't go anywhere in life. Well that happens if you're a lazy loser. Just don't be a lazy loser and explain to your father that weed makes you happy while you maintain good grades/good job etc.

  14. The bible says: smoke responsibly and in moderation and you'll be straight.
Oh wait, that's what I say!
You're silly ass Dad doesn't know shit. Go tell him to stfu and smack a bong.

Son, I didn't catch your age, but I know your dad wants what's best for you, and I agree with him, drugs of any kind don't have a place in an adolescents' life. But it has nothing to do with Christianity. Give your body and mind a chance to develop naturally, then you can screw it up if you want to. It's very hard to concentrate on your school work if you're toasted all the time. That's your pinche' job now, going to school and growing up. Do yourself a favor and don't fuck it up. You have the rest of your life to screw up, don't start before you're grown. Youth is a time to learn, don't try and cram it all into a summer. The world is full of flaky people, and misery loves company. Shun them.

Look, I'm very new to this stuff, but not to drugs, of all kinds. If you want to know where I'm coming from, listen to Jim Carroll's "City Drops into the Night" , look at my user name, and you might get a hint about who I was to many people for a long time. I'm way ahead of you, man, and I've learned a few things. It's very hard for me to stay quiet after what I've seen in 45+ years of getting blitzed. Your Pop wants what's best for you, you'll be able to tell him to screw off soon enough and get away with it, anyway. It's his house, and you live there.
Perhaps most important, it's not cool to shit where you live.

And don't listen to creeps who tell you your dad's wrong. I know all about those guys, misery loves...If I'm wrong about your still living at home, disregard all the above and continue grooving.

  16. Yea wow finaly a question that commonly make sense of its own uses'! as other possibly say this about religion, "most are hypocrisy", remember if u know ur bible n verses Jesus quoted
    "King James Bible matthew 23.13
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. most people are hypocrites! point out a few other sins and they lash... wen jesus told us to be still in stormy weathers, " wen one strikes your cheek turn to him the other also so that he may reek his judgment!

    King James Bible gen. 9:3
Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. see this every moving thing weeds move wen the winds disturb them they have life in them talking to ur plants motivates there growth for some strange reason, as my fellow green thumbers will agree! :)

being realistic about Gods creations is no joke to played with, while some ppl intoxicate there bodies with a carbon filled substance called tobacco cholesterol diebeties heart dieases gum dieses.....etc the lists could go on...and on.....and on....get my point about sins instead of God pointing out all ur flaws or "sins", hes forgiving of the things we do. whether there murders to fornication to intoxication he sees them all the same and we must learn from these things and stop doing them, so he sent a sacrifical lamb that would be the dedication to Jesus' life not his appearance but his personality as an individual to except others! regardless of there choices... simple choices to do the desires of our heart and not to fail because a simple lack of faith. dont quit man there was a huge gap of jesus' life missing from the bible. the man had to learn from his mistakes before he could ever take the role of being a true man of God!

    • Now about your drive to do things in life is totally up to you! I dont know what God your church preaches about or what order your family's in but my church says just to come as you are. not come into the church only if your forgiven first! but simply like the bible says come as you are!

    • Your relationship with God is in your soul & heart not ur mind, wen u think God isnt with you and you think hes left he hasnt, when u excepted christ he forever wrote ur name into the lambs book of life! waiting upon the return of you seeking true wisdom and knowledge. not swinging back and forth into religion/s...
    King James Bible
Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.
Self control "daniel son", control your urges to try different drugs that r created by MAN not by GOD, lsd exstacy cocaine meth u know hard cores alchol is also ok as long as u dont intoxicate yourself, and become into a drunken stupor! wisdom is to be expressed to your dad. since u must have his approval or exceptance in life>? you should only seek approval in something God created not what mans trying to condemn :) like they did to jesus, so we all know how this story goes!

    Love peace n Chicken GREASE

  17. the problem here is that everyone is looking at whether or not the bible says its a sin, it IS against Christianity to use pot if and only if you NEED pot to make you happy, speaking from a christian point of view, you should only need God to fulfill yourself and be happy.

  18. I Know Plenty Of "Good" Christians who smoke pot, they dont seem to think there going against their religion and neither do I

  19. refering back to the dude who talked about the sufi's

this summer i went to iran for 3 weeks ( my moms from there ) and you know how you have "good christans" here who read the bible 900 times a day for "guidance' and wear apropraite clothes and all that shit. in iran its the same thing exept there muslim. there simularities between the two type were so common. i swear if they met face to face with no bias before them they would get along. anyways as i was saying i met a group of sufis 4 dudes they were pretty cool one of em was like 60 he told me a story of how they used to smoke with american hippeis back in the day when iran was americas allie. so these dudes smoked hashhish . well i smoked with them to on several ocasions. point being said is that sufi's in iran = hippies and pot heads in america the conservatives look at them the same way. so going back to religion those who want to twist your mind will twist it theres no escape from that.

and also you know how it says adam and eve ate from a plant and thats why there on earth couldnt that plant be weed LOL just a thought.

fuckin cant wait for my parenst to go out today so i can smoke
    :smoking::smoking::smoking::smoking:

  20. Show me in the bible where it says
"Thou shalt not smoke Cannabis, or injest any drugs."

Hell they were getting mad fucked up on alcohol and other things back then anyways.
