Manganese Deficiency Maybe something else

  1. Hello,

I'm having a slight problem with 2 of my hopefully soon to be ladies. I see no bugs on leaves or in the soil. The next time I water I plan on flushing.

I am using 60% harvest moon soil with a 40% perlite.
    250 watt MH
    4" inline
    Temps between 60-82
    Humidity between 20-70
Nutes Botanicare Progrow PureBlend 2tsp prior to this I used 1tsp
    Growmore Seaweed extract 1tsp
Plants are approx 1.5 months old.

The growth seems slow and I originally thought it was a nitrogen deficiency because the leaves were yellowing and increased the feeding strength. The brown spots on the one plant starting showing approx a week ago after a plain watering, yellowing a little before. I didn't want to feed twice in a row so I gave it the plain water early last week. Then early this week I fed with the 2tsp Pureblend and the 1tsp Growmore ph'd the nutes prior to feeding between 6.2-6.5. I foliar feed with the growmore approx once a week. Please help as I'm unsure what is truely wrong. If you need additional info I will provide it.

Pic B was the one that started showing these symptoms 1st.

  2. I am no expert, by any means, but recently I had a similar issue.  I first thought it was a nitrogen deficiency, too. But the dark spots that appeared led me to believe it was an issue with magnesium and/or calcium. I was using some crappy dirt I got outside, until i got a bag of good, rich soil.  Once I transplanted into a good soil, the problem stopped spreading and now all is well.

If I were you, I would consider feeding with CalMag or Epson salt.  Epson salt can be used, in a pinch, for magnesium issues.  Epson Salt = Magnesium sulfate.

Hopefully, more experienced grower can confirm this. Good luck.

  3. This is very good advice, but...

Manganese deficiency is VERY rare in soils, no matter how shitty they might be.

What I would like to know is how you determine when it's time to water, and how often are you watering?

    Oh yeah... STOP ADDING FERTILIZER!

  4. I did acquire some epsom salt today i was thinking of doing a tsp to gallon and foliar feeding once the lights are off.

As for the watering 1st I do the weight test. If it feels light, then I do the finger test. If its light and my finger comes out dry then its time to water. Its about a once a week thing alternating between nutes and plain water tab that does sit for at least 24hrs prior. And the more pictures I look at online the less I think it is a manganese deficiency. Here are pictures 24hrs later.  Also the lights are on 18/6 Strain is unknown.

Also I read on a site that when I flush to add nutes to the flushing water any one else do this? I have not.

    Thank you,
    Hello

I want to clarify something I noticed, before the discussion goes too far.  The OP suggested, in the thread title, that there is a Manganese(Mn) deficiency.  In my post, I was referring not to Manganese, but instead, Magnesium(Mg).

I actually have not researched Manganese(Mn) issues, but when I was having some issues of my own, I specifically focused on Magnesium(Mg) and possibly Calcium (Mg and Calcium go hand-in-hand, frequently).  After looking at your new pictures, your plant looks exactly how mine does. However, mine stopped spreading after I transplanted into good soil.  Unfortunately, this doesn't help you, because I did not have to go as far a specifically treating the symptoms with CalMag or Epson salt.  I did have Epson salt on hand and ready to go, because I was sure it was a Magnesium issue.

As far as flushing, from my knowledge, you should flush with water without nutes, like you said.

Again, I am no expert, so hopefully someone else can help here. For all I know, Mn and Mg issues have the same symptoms and could be treated the same way.  I would keep researching and find other grow logs where people have the same apparent issue as you do.  I could be very far off, so keep looking.  Good luck!
