Mandatory breathalyzer ignition on ALL cars?

  1. Reading shit like this makes me sick. Washington 8-year-old killed in wrong way crash in Montana | KING5.com Seattle
As much as I am all for personal liberties, driving intoxicated is proven time and again as one of the most dangerous plagues to our society today. Given the fact that its illegal anyway to be driving "over the limit", would it be a horrible idea to install breathalyzer ignition systems ala DUI Dan in every automobile in the US? I want to hear your opinions, is it a constitutional right to drive in any state one decides to, or is protecting innocent lives worth this invasion of privacy/freedom?

  2. The way I see it, freedom means you have as many rights as possible without inflicting on somebody else's rights or wellbeing.

This inflicts. I don't think all people should have it, but I definitely think all people with previous DUI's and public intoxications should have it. Harsh, but I don't take drunk driving very lightly.

But seriously drunk driving is just horrible all around. For the people who do it, for the people it happens to, for anybody involved it is simply horrifying.

  3. Im 25. Dont own a car and dont drive. Because driving is a privledge (sp?) that I do not wish to partake in.

  4. Yes, it would be a horrible idea...That's no better an idea than "Punish everyone for the few."

Previous DUI charge, sure, I can go with that...Not financially feasible at this time for the United States, but a good future goal long after our previous goal of getting out of our current fucked state has come and gone. Unfortunately, as good an idea as that is, our country is currently not capable of sustaining such an idea for a very long period of time if at all.

    Priorities and all that jazz.

  5. Never thought of it that way. I think every person who gets a dui should have one for life. If they go to register their car they have something on their license that says there must be a breathalyzer installed.

  6. how about just having police breath test people coming out of bars?

  7. Billy Joel doesn't approve of this.

  8. That's just retarded plain and simple. It takes a few thousand or so to fuck it up for millions? That's not right, previous offenders yes I can understand that, but for life? I mean cops can say your DUI for like one or two beer you had an hour and half ago and blow like a .009. I like the idea of everyone who drives to a bar has valet take their keys when they park and when they want to leave they must take a breathelyzer to get their keys back.

  9. I support this 100% lol

EDIT:: But only if its accurate as fuck. Like a previous user stated i dont want my car to refuse me service for 2 beers i drank a few hours ago

The whole situation is pretty ridiculous and out of control, meaning America's standpoint on drinking in driving all around..
Not only do SO many people not get arrested for it, so many (and most importantly) repeat offenders get off in court and don't get maximum penalties, or the breathalyzer in their car. Not to say everyone is guilty, or deserve the worst, but many do.
I actually looked up stats on it a lil while ago and one I found said 1 MILLION drivers a year get arrested for DUI Even if it's anywhere close to that, that is out of control.
However, I guess there are enough lobbyists, enough politicians making money, and enough powerful corporations keeping the laws relatively lax on the whole issue.
At a time where car accident fatalities and injuries and damage are probably at its highest, especially with teens and young adults, there is no excuse for having the "legal limit" set at .08...
That to me = "oh well I have .08 to go, that's probably 3 drinks, maybe more if I don't have to drive for a while" "oh I'll sober up... ENOUGH" even if it was .02, people would know even with one drink they might be damn close to that limit and maybe would make them think otherwise.

Here in MA, we have very harsh DUI laws, aka Melanie's Law, however, I'm sure you all can guess how those law came to be. (with the death of some poor young girl)

sad all around, and needs to change.

    - Three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some point in their lives.
    - Of fatal accidents in 2009, 32 percent involved alcohol-impaired drivers.
    - On average, one person died every 48 minutes in 2009 due to an alcohol-impaired driver.
-Approximately 1.4 million drivers were arrested in 2001 for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) or narcotics. This is an arrest rate of 1 for every 137 licensed drivers in the United States. (NHTSA, 2003)

  11. Not gonna work, stupid idea.

What if it malfunctions and you need your car for an emergency? people might actually die this way also.

    Just educate the people.

  12. I honestly don't get how you could argue for not having these in every car. With technology they could make it as easy as turning the key. I forget the exact stat but a drunk driver drives hundreds of times before being caught, so the previous DUI conviction doesn't make much sense. How does a breathalyzer hurt you?

  13. what if it fucks up? technology is good at that too

what if you only had 1 beer but the breathalyzer is giving wrong readings and you get stuck?

you can also get a sober friend to breath instead of you unless they implement some fancy breath recognition device ha

Many reasons man, just think about it for a minute.
People need to control themselves not be controlled, but ehh.

  14. You're asking the government for more oppressive laws? Don't worry, they will comply.

I'm sure it's already in the planning stages.

Once their foot is in the door (and it's been in since the Civil War, at least), and they realize that they can do anything they want, they will never stop until we have "total government." That, by the way, is where the word "totalitarianism" comes from.

  15. Land of the free...

  16. Well yes somebody could take it for you but they could take it for someone with a DUI conviction also. And that's more trouble then if you didn't have one at all. And they probably don't mess up to much because police use them and I'm sure they're fairly accurate. In the case they mess up it would just be like a leak or something you could get fixed. Hopefully at minimal cost

  17. Where?

  18. I also take drunk driving very seriously. That and cigs are my two big pet peeves
