Make room for dinner.

  1. Most of us are probably familiar with what the phrase generally means, but let's examine an alternative.

One day, three of my friends and I decide to have a nice dinner. We ask our new acquaintance from Romania to join us. He is a contrite fellow, stocky an filled out. We begin our evening with some casual meandering of conversation and wine drinking. I strike up a conversation with our new friend and here is the latter half:

"So, when do we eat?" he inquires.

"Oh any minute now, I suppose."

"Oh! Well... who's preparing the meal?"

"No need to worry, fellow! I know you are hungry."

I cut the conversation off with a tapping of my glass.

"Gentlemen, let us proceed to the dining quarters."

I must hold our friend back momentarily while the others proceed to the dining room.

"Please forgive my friends and I, as we are not as well mannered as our friends to the far east when it comes to dinning etiquette. I trust you'll be a good sport about it, lad?"

    "Uhh, sure thing. Let's eat!"

He lets out a brief, nervous laugh.

    "Marvelous!"

We join our friends in the dining room only to discover there are one too few seats at the dining table.

"My sincerest apologies, lad! I shall get you a seat posthaste. Gentlemen, while I fetch this man a seat, please, make room for Anton."
