Main Stalk Giant Cracks

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Outdoors' started by Barocca, Jul 6, 2018.

  1. Hey Y'all,
So I've got this plant that has some pretty significant cracks developing around the base of its main stalk. I honestly don't know if this is the plant showing stretch marks or if this is some kind of serious problem that needs tending to. I have 4 lower branches that break off the main stem and they are all pretty much developing these cracks. One of them was so bad it created a small cavern and I could see the innards of the main stalk, so I took some wax and filled it so no pests would get in there. So what should I do GC? Just let her grow? Fill the cracks? Spray it with something? I'm all ears.

  2. I never leave bottom branches like that on my plants. They more than likely are the reason for the cracks. IMHO. I would cut them off. You do not want branches breaking and leaving holes in the main stalk. If there are holes in the main stalk from broken branches, you need to cover them. Good luck.

  3. Looks like inconsistent watering. Or lack of silica / Si. Like Mahmo said, don’t leave any “open wounds”. My personal opinion would be that cutting off those branches would leave larger open wounds. Maybe just use some medical tape or something similar and make sure all the “cracked” areas are well covered. Dab some hydrogen peroxide on the “cracks” before doing so. Should be fine.

  4. Those cracks are like stretch marks on fat people. From rapid growth.
I've had them on my plants with no real adverse affect. They could attract bugs and pathogens being close to the soil.
Nurseries carry tar to patch up cracks like those in fruit trees.

  5. Patch those cracks for sure......

    Those are open wounds.

  6. I would patch them with an anti bacterial/anti fungal like rooting gel covered by tape? Something like that.

  7. I wouldnt worry too much about it I get a few of these every year outdoors, indoors never.Needless to say nothing bad has ever happened as the plant kinda heals itself,If it makes you feel better put some of the black goo plant repair/patch material on it.

  11. Ok so a quick update, I filled the cracks with some simple wax and since then have lost one of my lower branches. So the cracks seem to be getting worse. When I ripped off the branch from the main stalk, it revealed an even deeper gash seen in the picture. Is this a nutrient thing or maybe some type of rot? I have searched the internet and can't find anything.

  12. Looks like infection. That's why I said use an antibacterial/antifungal paste to seal the wound. I would recommend filling the wound with rooting gel and cover it with something and soaking the soil with neem oil if you're not in flower.

  13. Someone with more knowledge on this subject can probably tell you another substance to use. But essentially you need to use a systemic treatment because bacteria and fungus has already entered the plant.

Only one that I know is systemic is neem oil.
