Made some ABV cannacaps (detailed steps & pic)

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by BrianC78, Aug 28, 2019.

  1. Hi everyone,

I'm Brian I've been lurking for some time now and I've learned so much. All along I've been refining my own technique for making edibles and getting better results...but still not perfect.

So the caps in the picture attached were made as follows (if anyone's interested):

    1) I ground up approx. 7g of ABV. This was vaped in a Flowermate 5.0s, either at 385 or 400 F for anywhere from 5-8 minutes typically. The bud was 'blue cookies' I believe it to be approx 25% thc (sry non-legal state)
    2) Added 1.5 tablespoons of coconut oil to the ground up (very very fine) ABV in a small glass jar.
    3) Added 0.5 teaspoons of soy lecithin granules.
    4) First I let the slow cooker heat up on high until the water reached 180 F. Then I placed the sealed glass jar in a water bath in my slow cooker for 2.5 hours. Removed and shook it around every half hour.
    5) Removed the jar, waited for it to cool down a bit and then filled 17 size "0" gelatin capsules. Note: I chose not to strain. I did end up with some material I couldn't get up with the dropper I was using, so I manually added it to fill another few caps.
    6) Took 6 regular caps and 1 cap of oil soaked ABV. Put remaining caps in the freezer where they lightened up to that nice green color you see there.
    7) It's been 40 minutes, starting to feel effects (edibles take forever to kick in for me).

Well that's it. I'll report back with an update on effects shortly. Ya know, for science.

  2. Nice man. Pretty much my daily runner.

  3. nice recipe. Have you tried cooking for longer though, do you get any different results from shorter vs longer?
I follow almost the same recipe but I cook for at least 4 hours and 7 hours at most.

  4. Thanks guys.

I'm glad you asked because now that I remember I did let it heat for much longer once, around 8 hours overnight basically and it came out really strong. I'm gonna try that next time because these came out a little less potent than I hoped.

I've also used the oven method (220 for 40 mins with a freeze in between...but results have varied too much to determine which method is best. IDK if that's just how it goes with ABV. But I am interested to know the pros and cons of each method oven vs. slow cooker...

  5. Ovens are regulated and stay within 20 degrees of the desired temp.
Most crock pots and slow cookers are unregulated with just a length of resistance wire designed to pull a set amount of current. 400watts for example. They keep heating and heating so I recommend using thermometers in both to know what temps you actually have.

Water bath in a jar will need more time for sure.
Experiment as that is what most of us do. The times, temps and amounts work well for the grade of Kief I make and your material may differ a lot in particle size and that can affect the way it infuses.

For me the longer it processes the more couch lock, "I need a nap" it gets. I want to be awake and functional as I take a cap for breakfast and don't want to be useless all day.
You may have other needs and only playing with the times and temps will show what you like best.
My friend TTS finds my oil a little to "On" and wired for his liking and wants a longer cook on the next batch I give him.
4 Heat and freeze cycles takes the edge off the high and makes it more enjoyable for him.

I learned much the same thing on letting my harvest cure. I tried a just dried extraction and made that Kief into caps but it was way to sharp edged a high even for me. I felt like I was gritting my teeth the whole time the stone lasted.
I get much the same high from dabbing todays Rosin and Wax. Not enough CBD to take the edge off I suspect.

I went back to a minimum of 30 and more like a 60 day cure and that is the stone I prefer. It has the balance both TTS and I like when smoked as Flower or Kief.
Some inexplicable parts got lost when I tried to rush the cure. It is something that comes with time and enough experience as you learn your personal choices.

  6. Thanks for the information this forum is great I really went from knowing nothing about edibles to where I'm learning something new every day I'm on here.

I tried again earlier today, this time I let the ABV sit in some coconut oil for 24 hrs (no heat) and then I did 2 forty-minute heatings in the oven at 210 ...40 minutes each. Froze for 2 hours in between.

    I used approx 5 or 6 grams and it made 21 caps...just ate 7 so we'll see ... Well I hope that's the effect I get lol....
    Enjoy your weekend everyone!!!
