MacBook running Slow -- Fix?

Discussion in 'Silicon (v)Alley' started by MaltedGrapez, Aug 20, 2009.

  1. I have one of those super awesome black macbooks I got it in July 2007 so it isn't that old.

Basically, it runs slooooow now. Things just take way longer than anyone would want them or expect them to take to load. Internet, finder, i mean... just everything runs slowly... it sucks. I got this program called Onyx that cleans up my mac & is supposed to make it run more smoothly but recently it hasn't been accomplishing that.

Any ideas on how I could speed my mac up?
I'd like it to run at least at a normal speed rather than snail mail.
(i only have 1gig of ram and i know i should increase that amount but BESIDES that...)

    Thanks for any&all input.

    this is Onyx:
    Apple - Downloads - System/Disk Utilities - OnyX

  2. go into your system preferences and go into your account settings and remove your login items

  3. How much space do you have on your hard-drive? Sometimes having a disk near capacity can slow it down. Is it just your internet that's slow or is it applications as well?

everything is slow. like even when i turn it on it takes a long time to get to the login and then when i finally login it just takes a long ass time to load. (Not super long... but i mean, my mac used to be very speedy...things loaded instantly inless it was something biiig like photoshop..)

i think i have at least 10gigs free... probably more.

  5. Run your system monitor and then turn off whatever processes are taking up too much space.

Also, run Disk Utility and repair your permissions.

  6. It could be a number of things.

You could do a clean install ... meaning re-installing your operating system. That does, unfortunately, uninstall any applications you have that don't come with the install disks. You would also want to back up your data on an external HD (Docs, Pics, Music, etc)

I do a clean install once a year or so on my MacBookPro. Also, upgrading never hurts.
I upgraded to 4GB of Ram and a 500GB HD ... everything is lightening fast and I have plenty of space.

  7. Also ... upgrade to Snow Leopard when it comes out.

It will make better use of your Duo Core processor ... things should run faster and more efficiently.

  8. Go to Apple - Downloads - Mac OS X - System/Disk Utilities and download daisy disk. It's a utility that gives you a detailed pie chart of what exactly is on your drive. It'll allow you to clean it up and get rid of files that might be taking up space and causing your slow down.

  9. But it is a mac I thought they never freeze, break, run slow?

  10. Thanks for all the help guys.

I'm at work for another minute, when I get home I'll start putting your suggestions into action... right after I pack a bowl however.

  11. Yeah, but it's also a machine, and under certain kinds of stress, even the most meticulously manufactured machines will have problems.

  12. especially pornography stress.

  13. Just a tip, it's best to keep at minimum 10% free space on your hard drives. It will start to run slower the closer it gets to being full.

  14. You ain't kiddin.

  15. ive heard about some pretty nasy malware targeting macs going around lately, i guess you wouldn't really no for sure unless you did an entire OS reinstallation. seeing how, the malware you really need to worry about isn't in alot of antivir sig dbs' mac or otherwise.

  16. Shoulda bought a PC. Then at least there would be oodles of good advice on keeping it running smoothly... instead of the massive denial that it can ever have any problems at all... and a hush hush customer service dept that never lets you see your supposed defective parts... and charges exorbitant rates for simple, cheap repairs.

  17. you know what might fix that mac problem? .... hmmm

getting a windows machine, that'd probably do it.

  18. Why all the hate on macs? Is it cause your jealous? Your jealous. lol :)

  19. No way! I'm on a mac now, and I love it! I've used pc's and mac's, each for several years, and macs are a far better investment. The only drawback, is it's not a good platform if you're a gamer (most games aren't coded for macs). However! if you partition your hard-drive, you can run windows (not something that looks like windows, or windows programs, but windows) on a mac. I didn't do that with mine, but it is an option. And no blue-screen error messages!:)

  20. Theres always going to be alot of haters of OS X, but thats cause they ethier never tried it or have not given it enough chance. IMO it's the most advanced OS there is so far, and it runs so nice. For so many reason.
