Ok so I'll be starting my first grow in dwc when my beans get here soon but I wanted clarify a Scrog and lst. I've done plenty of reading but I want to make sure I have this right So the picture below is my setup from the top view, the line is a lst'd plant and the circle is the bucket. Does this make sense for the Scrog? Train it to grow to the left and right of the screen?
in my experience it's easier to top it and let a few branches stretch up before putting hte screen on. That way you'll have a some long branches that you can bend down and reach almost all the way to the corners of the scrog. This way seems to get the screen fill quicker and more evenly. Otherwise you can end up with bare spots or have difficulty 'reaching' a corner. ...also if you get a big thick branch that reaches the side of the screen with nowhere to train it....just lop the top off so it will branch out...don't try to struggle to find a place to train a branch...if there isn't room, just chop it off. I often end up with alot of extra growth in the middle of the screen...I just thin it out and don't stress on it. Trust me you'll have alot more of a 'loss' if you let it get too thick and it drowns out it's own light. * a perfect scrog is an even scrog.
Thank you that is some good information I'll top it when it's prolly at its 6th node. But with my pic is that fine? The plant will be bent towards the middle of the Scrog and then i train outwards?
yeh it'll work out great make sure you have room to water still and be able to reach under to help train branches.
I only have a 150 watt hps, I just see that the yield would be better if I lst and Scrog in my case because I have about 3.5 feet vertical to work with
150w hps is great for a single plant application, but please do not use the full 3.5 feet you have available. LST will keep the plant low and bushy, SCROG is great when creating an even canopy and creating supports for the buds. IMO - LST and grow from center towards one side, top/fim and run new tops in opposite directions to circle pot and then allow new bud sites to grow upward through the screen. Overall height is your choice but I would check out your lumen distance output. I don't know off the top of my head, but you want to make sure your lowest portion of the plant still receives good light penetration until it grows up and through the screen and you start trimming that lower growth to promote the upper growth. As said before - your going to be in veg for a minute. Your yield will be better, yes, but your also not going to harvest in 80-90 days going this route. Personally - quality over quantity and quality takes time : )
Thank you, I still think the plan I have to lst by bending her down (so that she is near the wall) when she is about 12 inches after FIMing her is the way to go. Is it a good move? I want to have my light about 10 inches away until it grows up to it in late flower then about 6-8 inches. I really want to grow Sensi Star but it seems it's out of stock /:
Definitely do what you prefer, but in my experience if you wait too long, you are not going to be able to bend the top down far enough to promote the new budsites to be produced. In the link below you can see where the 'top' of the plant is lower than the middle portion of the plant, this causes the the plant to think the budsites need to be produced at the 'high' points - the 'tip' will still produce bud but its not going to be the big christmas tree cola. LST-results That being said - if you bend it down from 12 inches, sure - you can do it, but you risk snapping that main stem/branch just be careful when you start to LST. I usually start to lst by the 4th to 6th node production.
here's a link to a HPS penetration chart. That show the lumen output hornchen was referring to. See how the 150w is good for 4-12 inches away...any buds further then that will just be fluff. Try to keep them in that sweet spot. I'd try to do a sort bowl shaped scrog..or at least a 'U' shape...trying to surround the bulb with buds.
