I need to convert a few videos before I can transfer the files to my Zen. Win7 installed the necessary drivers to automatically convert videos on send but I'm looking for something a little more sophisticated than 'convert and send'. Any recommendations?

take a look at xilisoft ultimate converter, its a really great program, but im not so sure what a Zen is lol, it might be able to help
the zen comes conversion software which automatically converts videos to fit the player's screen, but I want to keep original aspect and watch movies on an external display. The manufacture's software isn't compatible with Windows 7 64-bit OS so I need something else...
i've tried that, the free version only allows you to convert 3 minutes. otherwise you gotta pay for it.
If you're not afraid of digging deep into the guts of video encoding you can check out mencoder or ffmpeg. They provide the most fine-grained control but in exchange you have to sacrifice about a week of your life to reading the docs to do much of anything. Since you probably don't want to do that, you might also check out Handbrake. Without knowing the particular video formats you need it's sort of hard to make a recommendation.
I've used AnyVideoConverter for a while, but recently the video and audio aren't quite synced. Maybe it's just my computer; I don't know.
I'm going to try Xilisoft Video Converter. I want to watch regular old .avi .mpg files, but zen is picky and wants to convert everything. Without conversion I'll lose audio, video, or both.
