Looking for instrumental music

  1. I was wondering if anyone here knows of some good instrumental music. I am looking for something rather weird and different and still have some rock elements, like guitar. No words.

Maybe I should use an example... I was in my literary writing class today and my teacher had us do this exercise where he played instrumental music and he had us write whatever came to our heads. The idea was to let the music take us places in our head and then write down whatever came out of the music. Anyway, the "song" was a bunch of crickets (obviously at night) and a light, soft guitar riff. That was perfect.

I'm open to almost anything.. except techno and songs that are high-strung, or busy. I want mellow stuff.

  2. hey brother, I know just what you are looking for. You need to check out some Dub music. It is basically reggae that is stripped of the vocals and remixed with FX and other weird elements...laid back, mellow but its got that "trippiness" to it fi sure.
some classic artist to start out with might be:
    King Tubby
    Scientist
    Augustus Pablo
    Prince Jammy
    Dub Syndicate
    Jah Shaka
    Sly & Robbie

if you want some free top underground Dub, Roots, and Dancehall
    check this site out: www.versionist.com

    Have fun with it

    Respect

    -Boards of Canada
    -Harold Budd
    -Casino vs. Japan
    -Biosphere

  4. Al Di Meola (spanish guitar)
Amon Tobin (heavy breakbeat with good rock elements)
    Nightmares on Wax
Beastie Boys (got wicked instrumental songs)
    The Crystal Method (love'em)
    Kid Loco

  5. If your looking for weird instrumental stuff thats still heavily rock influenced check out these bands:

    Explosions in the Sky
    Godspeed you Black Emperor
    Slint

  9. bump.

i'm lookin for instrumental music too. stuff without being hypnotised by language, just the music.

  10. Even though it has already been said, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Explosions in the Sky would be my choices. A Silver Mt. Zion is good too, but not all of their stuff is instrumental.

And of course...fusion, if you want some sick guitar parts. Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Weather Report, 70s Miles Davis, and Stanley Clarke are some awesome fusion choices.

  11. Mark Farina's "Mushroom Jazz" selection. I think there is a total of 6 full length CD's out in stores.

  12. Bela Fleck and The Flecktones

I can honestly say their music has changed my life for the better

  13. moist of buckethead music is instrumental.. hes an amazing guitar player... check em out..

  14. If you like cool acoustic instrumental stuff, check out Michael Hedges.
