looking for grow cabinet ideas.

  1. my problem is that i live in student style housing near USF's campus in tampa. its a rent by the room place with its own bathroom. this is severly limiting me on space. ive thought about doing it in my closet, but i cant get the hieght that i need.

so heres what ive figured out. i have one empty wall in my room that gives me a space of about 3.5'x1.5'x7.5'. is that going to give me enough room? i have some basic carpentry skills so i can build something nice, im just wondering on specifics. is anyone doing something similar to what im talking about? are there pictures? is this even possible?

hell, if these answeres are already here somewhere, ill be happy with a link. ive been lurking here for a while now, and ive learned alot about the growing process, but ive been having trouble trying to work this issue out.

im really hoping for some pictures of how people made their cabinets light proof as well, and how they handled their vent fans and such.

this is posted in the grow room setup section as well, so if there is a problem with it being in two places, i apoligize.

thanks for any help that you can give

  2. Student housing is not secure at all for growing. I would discourage attempts to build something in your room -- handy or not, the sounds of hammering and power tools will draw attention.

  3. Yea, I hate to say it, but I agree with toasty.

Doesnt this mean you also have quite a few people within "smell" vicinity?

  4. i wouldnt have to build it in my apartment, i can do it at home one weekend, my parents wouldnt think twice about what i was doing.

as for the smell...where i live is pretty chill. its only 4 apartments per floor, and 4 rooms per apartment. it all outdoor hallways and shit and im up on the 3rd floor (the top floor). i know most of the people around me and they all burn, we smoke on our porch and shit all the time. plus the 3 kids that live with me all smoke, so that wouldnt be a problem.

  5. go to ikea, many locations wordwide or buy online www.ikea.com LOTS of cabinets for next to nothing, ive bought a 7 foot by 4 foot wardrobe there for $60 canadian or about $50 USD, it was at my door in 3 days.

    Highly recommend

  6. Dumb plan. I look forward to seeing you back on GC when you are released from prison.

Don't you DARE count on "only" 16 people on your floor keeping your secret. The quickest way to get busted is to let someone else know about your grow, who tells someone else who tells someone else who gets in trouble with LEO and needs a bargaining chip. Ever hear the expression "you can't put the toothpaste back in the tube?" If you tell even one person then you will never be sure that the whole world won't know.

I don't mean to be critical, I'm trying to save your ass.

  7. toastybiz is right, besides its student housing which means that periodically they do inspections. So if your friends don't leak the info, you still can end up in jail.

Won't that be nice for your parents, they send you off to school so that you can amount to something and you do something horendously stupid and go to jail instead.

Save your growing for when you have a place of your own and can reasonably expect privacy, then the good ppl at GC will be happy to help you out.

  8. 1. its not student housing, its privately owned. off campus, there are no periodic checks. its a regular old apartment complex with some shitty management. i should have just said student oriented, because its just lease by the room, not by the apartment, thats why i brought it up, because it confines me to a small space to do this.

    2. i never said that i would advertize the fact that i was growing, i just said that no one around would care. if i was in a dorm or something i could see where you were coming from, but im not. im in the back corner of my apartment complex in one of the back rooms on the 3rd floor. people walk around here at night openly trying to sell meth and shit, your telling me that growing 2 plants in my own room would be a problem?

as for my parents? lets try 1 parent. and she knows i toke up. so does she. she'd just be happy she could get grass off of me instead of her boss all of the time. and she doesnt pay for my college, or my rent, or anything else for that matter, so she has pretty much no say.

im not looking to grow 20 plants here, really just 3 or 3, however many i have room for. great steps would be taken to control the smell, but if i couldnt, the project would be ditched. im not going to go about this the wrong way, ive never done anything halfassed and this wouldnt be any diferent. ive thought about all of this already and all i was looking for were some damn growing cabinet ideas.

and for the one person that did help. thanks, ill look into it.

  9. look, i dont want to come in here as a newb and suddenly look like an asshole. its not my intention at all, i greatly apreciate the fact that you all are trying to save my ass, but i know i can make it work if i take the right precautions, and keep it small and QUIET. if not, like i said before, ill just trash the project and go back to pickin up bud from other people. im not big on risking my education and shit on a couple of plants.

  10. Well, all I can say is if your gonna do it, do it smart. Have a good budget for stealth products, and dont tell a soul!

  11. I'd be looking at a small ScroG cabinet, with carbon filter and silent fan installed. Around 250W of light should be enough, a 400W would get you better yields, but means you need more ventilation to keep the heat down, and more height (or else strong air-flow under the lamp).

Check out the Advanced growing section for details on ScroG. There are loads of plans for cabinets kicking around, too. Once you understand what you need, you are the best person to design your cabinet, because you have a better idea of where the water supply/fresh air/window/etc. is. Spend hours reading the forums.

    Light-proofing is the easy part.
