Looking for a external HD sync program

  1. Whats up City?
I keep a lot of music/pictures on my computer and keep them backed up on my external hard drive. So to update the folders what I have been doing is totally deleting the folder from my HD and replacing it with the folder from my computer. This takes hours and can be a pain in the ass. Anyone know a program that will sync the two folders when i plug my HD in? When I first got my HD my cousin sent me a link for a program but he doesn't remember it and neither do I. Any ideas? Thanks!

  2. I used Allway Sync to keep my flash drive and school data-drive in sync... I could create/edit a document on the comp at school, then turn around and create/edit another on my laptop using the flash drive, then plug it into a computer at school and run sync, both changes would get updated. That was fun.

But now that I'm out of school, it wasn't so useful for keeping my external HDD music folder backed-up and in-sync with my home server copy. It works, sure, but I really didn't need two-way sync. Now I use Windows' built-in robocopy command.

If you're just looking to sync one-way, like backing-up a folder from your laptop to an external HDD, try robocopy. Go to a command prompt, navigate to the folder containing the folder you want to sync, and do "robocopy FOLDER e:\FOLDER /MIR" (where e:\FOLDER is your external drive's path to the same folder). That'll make an exact mirror ("/MIR") of the folder you're copying, without having to re-copy everything each time. It's pretty nifty :)
