Liver and Acid Reflux Probs

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by KonfliktxUnlmtd, Jan 20, 2010.

  1. ok, i know for a fact that MJ does cause some toxicity (correct wording??) in your liver, but i've had a liver problem called "fatty infiltration of the liver" for about a yr now, and MJ helps my symptoms (acid reflux, abdominal cramps, nausea.. etc). I talked to a friend who currently lives in CA and gets MMJ.. he said i was stupid for smoking to alleviate these problems because of the toxicity factor.. he says "yea you'll feel better but you're making it worse".. I do tend to believe him about things like this, but MJ has become one of the few reasons I'm even able to eat anymore..

my question is this.. is the toxicity caused by MJ bad enough to merit the discontinuation of its use in my case?

i was stunned to find this fact out because i had begun to believe it was 100% miracle drug.. regardless of what i find i will probrably continue to smoke because a good short life is better than a long miserable one..

thanks for the help in advance..

The jury is still out on cannabis and liver issues (in Hep C individuals). Did the cannabis use cause the liver problems, or did the increased liver problems cause more cannabis use (to control symptoms such as nausea)? More studies are needed.

Medical News: Cannabis Associated with Liver Fibrosis in HCV - in Infectious Disease, Hepatitis from MedPage Today

What type of fatty liver disease do you have, and have you had a biopsy to confirm? The only study I can find that indicates cannabis possibly does anything to the liver is in Hep C.

  3. I was told that I have a fatty liver as well. I saw a Gastroenterologist who told me to lose some weight and that usually reduces or eliminates the condition. I weigh about 205 and I should be somewhere around 175 ideally. I'm slowly working on losing some weight but its very hard to do when I smoke weed because the munchies are hard to control.

If you dont mind me asking, are you overweight and have you attempted some weight loss to see if it made a difference in your liver enzyme levels?

best of luck to your health!

  4. Thanks for mentioning that Jollystoner! Yup, NASH is really common. Best of luck with your weight loss journey.

    Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis

  5. I have severe GERD (reflux) and sometimes smoking Chron helps it and sometimes it doesn't, but It definetly helps with the nausea and cramps for the associated conditions. I must stay on my meds and folow my diet, If not I will pay. Smoking cigs usually aggravates it. I also have issues with my liver (different from yours, elevated levels, due to corpsman ODing me on IV opiates) but have never noticed an effect on my liver panels from periods of smoking to not smoking.

  6. I'd talk to your doctor. That's a pretty serious disease. For acid reflux, try a proton-pump inhibitor like Nexium or Asiphex.

  7. ok to elaborate a little i was diagnosed with fatty infiltration after an ultrasound of my abdominal organs.. it started when i began to notice random nausea that my wife laughed that was like i was pregnant (sour stomache in the mornings and alot of nausea when thinking about foods that dont set well with me and so forth). THEN i threw up a piece of what looked like fat (sorry if that groses anyone out cause i've become a little numb to all of it lol). and jollystoner, while im not "fat" i probrably fall under the same catagory as you in that i should be about 20 lbs lighter.. but my stomache problems have caused weight loss to be easier in that i can barely eat.. pot no longer gives me munchies but helps me get my 3 squares a day down. i also smoke cigarettes, but be proud because i've gone from a pack a day to sometimes as few as just a couple in a day. and i agree jayjay nothing irritates my shit like smoking.. wish i could quit completely, but when you feel like shit all the time its nice to have a stress reliever. also, thankyou redhead for the info, i followed the links and i feeler better informed because of it. and purecussion, i take a couple meds: cardiotek, lipoflavonoid, pancrease.. << prescriptions. and my OTC's like ur talking about are zantac and prilosec. i'll give those 2 you mentioned a shot next time im at the drug store.

ps: forgot to answer this in the above format.. i smoked very little pot (once or twice a yr) before i was diagnosed.. then having already been an MJ fan (mildly) i decided to see if it would help my nausea and it works awesome. problem is that even if i lived in a state with MMJ i dont think my problem is on the list of things that it can be perscribed for.. MJ has kept me from shooting myself in the face for the past yr.. figuratively speaking..

    thanks fellas

A friend of mine's insurance was cut and he had to either pay a premium for Nexium or use Prilosec and asked his doctor about it. The doctor said that Prilosec is the older generation and that Nexium was created because most people were doubling up on Prilosec. The purple pill, as they call it, has kept him out of the hospital because of his severe GERD. As for the appetite, have you looked at Marinol or Cesamet? Altohugh Cesamet is a synthetic THC, they both have the medicinal effects of marijuana. I'm pretty sure there are other appetite stimulants that don't involve marijuana, so ask your doctor and he'll be able to help you. Make sure you're seeing a specialist for each problem, not a general practitioner or HMO for everything.

  9. Yeah you dont have to be too overweight to have fatty liver disease. I need to lose about 30 pounds and you need to lose about 20 as you say. I also had an abdominal ultrasound done to detect the fatty liver. High levels of triglycerides and lack of excersize can cause fatty liver disease so stay away from sweets/carbs.

You mentioned that you threw up a piece of what looked like "fat" but I highly doubt it has anything to do with your liver because I dont think your organs are connected in a way where a piece of fat from your liver can come out while puking so dont be alarmed, it must be something you ate.

In regards to Toxicity or whether MJ contributes to fatty liver disease I have no idea but you do have a valid concern for that and if you do find out please keep me posted. I dont know what to say about the Acid reflux other than maybe if you use a vaporizer it would be more fogiving on your esophagus which would be less likely to aggravate it. They also have the new Vapor cigarrettes you can try for your nicotine fix.

  10. I have a Fatty Liver also, my gastrointerologist said the same thing, diet and exercise - and stop drinking alcohol. But MMJ consumption was never brought up, and my current GP knows I have a recommendation and is aware of my liver issues, and hasn't said anything about it.

  11. ^^thats what i came for lol

awesome.. to hear ur doctors opinion is sweet. however, my physician is a family doctor so there's no way im bringing it up to him. i see a gastro every once in a blue moon but my family physician is my main doctor. also, i should say that i have never noticed inflamation of symptoms after smoking so im pretty sure im good to go.. im going to bring this topic up to my gastro next i see him and hopefully he'll shed even more light that i can then share with you guys (jollystoner)

    thanks again guys,

  12. I am going to the GI doc on friday, If I remember I will try to get his opinion.....
