for metal halide and hps lights you need to use that ballast thing? how does it work, and what is a good type to be using?
well lemme help a little better you need a ballast that works with the bulb you are using they do sell them on ebay roughly $109 but dont know shipping and say that only seller and buyer will have this info but i think thats heresay dont believe it. the bulbs watts has to match the ballast used i dont know if a 400w ballast will run a 200w i dont think thats how they work but i dunno that much about them cept they do great for growing hope that helps
thanks. one more question. is it worth the extra money to use metal halide lights. or will just hps lights work fine. this is my first grow so im totally new.
actually u need a hps and a mh im not too familiar with it but one works for veg stage and the others for flower stage maybe someone with more experience can help

You will need a HPS/MH switchable system, which includes Ballast for HPS/MH, fixture for HPS/MH. 1x MH bulb, which will be used for veg stage, and 1x HPS bulb for the flowering stage.
