Let's talk curing and help me!

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by Letsgetbakedbro, Jun 9, 2025.

  1. Okay so I'm not totally 100% what curing does.... sometimes I speed dry and get white ash fat clouds a little rough throat... sometimes I'll dry 3 weeks and buds turn sponge... sometimes I'll cure super long and the buds burns black and hard to inhale... vape hits harsh...

So I've come to the conclusion that moisture is the cause for this white ash/smooth/easy to drag smoke lol

I've got some cheaper Grove bags that do maintain 60% RH... but I don't like the results and feel like they don't burn good until I dry the bud a bit more to crisp!!!

Now I've read some pros use WOOD MOSITURE METERS before jarring or bagging, Grove bags recommend this too... so I said FINE and bought one...

How would I use this, HOW DO YOU USE THIS and WHAT TIPS OR HELP can you give for drying and curing??? I don't want SPONGE LIKE BUDS or BLACK ASH BUD AT 60% RH I want easy to burn bud that slaps MAYBE I CURE TOO EARLY?

  2. I don't know about that meter, is it supposed to be better than regular hygrometers? I could see an advantage in checking stems for moisture content but how would you know what humidity you're drying in? Like if you're drying in a room with 20% humidity and checking moisture content of stems, the bud is going to get crispy dry before the stem dries to the proper 11% moisture content. Since the "pros" use it, I must be missing something. Maybe they use it in a climate controlled situation and use the meter to see when they're properly dry.

I don't know why you're getting harsh smoke from cured buds either. When I was growing in coco using chemical nutes my buds were almost too harsh to smoke regardless of a cure. When I started growing in the ground using compost, my buds smoked smooth. I was probably using too much nutes. I've seen cows ignore grass and weeds growing in the lot where lots of manure has landed and they avoid lush green grass growing from the overly fertile ground around a cow pie so I'm pretty sure too much nutes makes for a nasty smoke and flavor. I don't use chemical ferts now and I'd take a smaller harvest if it means a smoother smoke.

  3. I buy the standard little hygrometer/thermometers that cost like $16 per 12 pack or so on Amazon. 1 per mason jar. If it gets over 65% leave uncovered or back into a brown paper bag until it's 65%. Curing happens between 55% and 65%. If it drops too low, curing stops. If it's above 65% mold/bad shit can happen. At first open each jar daily and let sit for awhile then reseal. maybe 15 mins or so. After a couple weeks can cut back to every other day and more as the humidity in the jar gradually drops. X? chemical reactions take place over time and the weed is supposed to get smoother and tastier. It generally does but I've had a few that stayed a little rough.

I've been using this inkbird humidity controller for years now. Screenshot_20250610-100153~2.png I make a small cut in the edge of a mason far top, place sensor wire end In jar and seal jar ,( line the cut with electric tape to avoid cutting probe wire first).
    To ensure it's calibrated , Screenshot_20250610-102132~2.png
When at 62% , I put in a 62% boveda and seal jars with an air sucker sealer. I store sealed jars in a 62% rh and 60° room.
    I use the
    7,7,7 rule . 70° ,70% rh, 7 days. Still check buds regularly .
In a room with temp and humidity controlled, will make it all happen better.

  5. Hey how big is your jar? I only have pints it's almost $20 for a 12 pack were I'm at lol and gotta pick up shipping is almost 2x or 3x :p

I might buy a printer tent when I can to dry and cure but currently I dry and cure in my grow area so can't really control better than 68-73F and 46-62% with it usually 54% to keep mold out from flower tents!

How do you know for sure your buds have DRIED or CURED properly on a constant basis? I have no real comparison to know if I did a good job lol

BTW limited budget I got the Meter cause if it sucks I can refund no issues but I read from articles online about moisture instead of RH and seen some cats on videos using some device and found it its these type of meter

  6. I was doing jars but texture and smell turned ass vs the ones I just dried and picked off lol so I thought maybe I'm the issue then I got the cure bags and yes no burping but.....

I stil have the black ash problem EXCEPT if I let it dry bone dry or put the bud in 50% RH spot so I'm thinking I might be drying wrong or jarring early? I have the little hygrometers but on the articles online I keep reading about moisture instead if humidity and then RH being more important in cure lol....

Guess I need some tips or figure out how to know what is dry dry and not bone ass dry or wet center? Meh if the meter sucks I can refund :p

  7. Yeah my grow area with the tents is usually 70-73F and 47-52% RH with dehumidifier LIGHTS OFF and with LIGHTS ON it's 67-70F and 49-53% RH with the HVAC AC from the house which is the dry area/cure but for final curing I go to my sleeping area which is 67F and 62% RH (60% in the cure bags with Hygro meter inside)

I guess I just wanted some tips since my first time growing I didn't really cure just cold 40% RH and long dry for my usual around 10 days and white smooth ash buds, ever since chasing the cure I have to let the buds "dry out" before rolling up/packing a cone to puff lol

Got some organic bottle stuff I could try and compare but I'm just assuming it all comes down to moisture? Cause my first plants were ugly AF too haha pure problem but chuncky buds :p

Will keep trying seems like black might be a thing when doing fertilizers, will do more heavy watering during flush weeks and see if that help, the moisture meter is hard to find info on as the ones who mention it do bigger style grows/sell and then like you said control rooms with cure bags (the bag company also recommends the meters lol)

PS I'm a NOOB just learning not judging :)

  8. Mostly quarts, but I have a few 1/2 gallons and pint ones for weed gifts.

  9. Boveda packs seem to be pretty accurate and I've used them to calibrate cheap hygrometers. Put a Boveda in an empty mason jar with a hygrometer and wait 24 hours. Your hygrometer should read the same as the rating on the Boveda but it won't so adjust it if possible. Even if it's not 100% accurate, it'll still be close enough and better than flying by the seat of your pants as I did for most of my life.

  10. I mainly use 1/2 gal jars for everything.
Legal growing in NY got me 4.5 lbs last year so I've got lots of jars:).
I use the pinch test when drying, squeeze a nug and see how fast it comes back to shape . Fast reshape and it's dry and no reshape it's wet.
    So, when drying ,
    7,7,7,
    Slow indirect fan,
    Fresh air exchange,
A small space and controlled air helps a lot with drying and curing:thumbsup:
