Shall we!? I must know what other people thought. My friend said I had to watch this. His favorite movie all year, he said. Tom Hanks, he said. I should mention I began wanting to watch it more when I found out the band Sonmi had named themselves after the book this movie was based on. They just released their first album, Almost Human, but it's a shame they're still too small on the music scene to have been picked up by this blockbuster. Even if they based their music on the same subject. Too apropos I suppose. Anyhow... The book I can't judge as the movie probably departed in ways I don't even know. The movie I can judge mercilessly. Three hours I will never get back. Overblown, desultory, and shallow. I would like to have heard the writers' discussions about scope creep, if there were any. It quickly became impossible keeping up with the plot. I only felt marginally less stupid the fourth time I recognized the same actor with lots of makeup playing another role. As a footnote, I didn't know R-rated movies could show sex like that. That scene encapsulated where our culture is and how far Hollywood feels they must go to draw in the audience, even when Tom Hanks is starring. The exploitation and exhibition of skin in lieu of substance.
It's starting at the local dollar theater this weekend. I'll be checkin' it out. I'm not familiar with the book, but the trailer seemed intriguing. A bit of The Fountain meets The Fifth Element meets It's A Wonderful Life. Well, that's what I got from the trailer, anyway.
I'm sorry you feel that way, OP. I saw the movie and I thought it was on the same level (as far as complexity) as Inception. And I think it was almost as good. Did you actually "get" the movie? Because sometimes when people don't get a movie, they say it sucks. I say that with no offense. But to the other blades - This movie was INCREDIBLE. 5 different time periods but all running parallel. The more I watch it, the more I marvel.
Well now i'm torn whether to watch it or not, I think ill give it a go ahead though. I have a mint copy on my HDD right now so I might as well.
Ummm???? Watch it. Do it. And it's one of those movies where you have to pay attention throughout. If you can do that, it's worth it. Trust me. I can't stop watching it. It gets better every time. That's the true-true.
Yeah I think Ill save it until early tomorrow morning I just finished Dark Knight Rises. I have to watch movies in the morning when I wake up for I will fall asleep. I really get into them when I wake up at 6-7:30 am and turn on a movie, for some reason I am way more absorbed in the movie.
I found it an absolutely incredible film, a film before it's time. Not to be even be compared to the likes of Inception or other films (as great as they may be). Not the easiest movie to understand without deciphering with a fine comb. A journey of a soul with true karmic significance. Brilliant.
You know what? You're right. It does blow away Inception - and that's saying a lot! Cloud Atlas was too good. At 2 hours and 45 minutes long, you don't want it to end. The movie is too short!
For what it's worth, I hated Inception also. It, too, devolved into a series of death-defying, ear-raping action scenes which got away from a decent premise. I've also done far more investigation than the average person on dreaming and sleep research, so factually I was offended even despite the fact it was fiction. I'm amused you posit I didn't follow and my confusion is my sole reason for dislike. I did have trouble following the plot, only I attribute that to the movie's failure, not my own. It's fitting you brought up Inception. There's a reason that movie and its defenders generated so many memes along the lines of "You didn't like it? Did you understand it?" It wasn't that complex.
I'm amused that you seem to have a problem differentiating between a question and an assumption: That was a question, last time I checked. I'm glad you're amused. It sounds like you have an ego problem and are being condescending. THAT WAS AN ASSUMPTION. Sorry you disliked Inception and Cloud Atlas... Edit - And the other poster didn't say they hated Inception. They said it didn't compare. WTF? No offense, and I know it's not the topic of this thread, but you come off as extremely arrogant and condescending with reading comprehension issues. Hey - you insulted me. I'm just showing you what went down.
I thought it was great movie, and Im saddened that it was not given enough attention as other films this year. Mainly due to the fact that I believe that 2012 was such a great year for film, better than it has been since about 2008 in my opinion, which is when The Wrestler, Slumdog, The reader, and a lot of other great films all came out around the same time, which is what I felt happened this year as well. And obviously Cloud Atlas feel into the backdrop of a lot of the other movies that garnered much more attention. It really is a film more people need to go see, Im still surprised at how many wonderful movies came out this year.
You are right, it is a film and fiction at that. But then we would categorise the likes of the Matrix as just that and not see it for what it is beyond the immense graphics and scenes. We will lose all the insight the Wachowski brothers so kindly deciphered and depicted in such a compelling way for us the viewer. I don't want to turn into that douche who tries to find hidden meanings in a piece of string (like many many film critics/reviewers), but where there are dues it is cool of a person to acknowledge them. But arcadian, if you approach anything with the notion you have done your research 'far more than' whomever these 'average' people are and that you get 'factually' offended by films (despite the realm you speak of would be near to impossible to factually base arguments) , I recommend you stay clear of these peasantry movies in which you know everything... here is something you will like [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnl_hFNqRUo]The Lorax- trailer - YouTube[/ame]
Thanks for the laugh. You're good with emphasis, show me where I insulted you. Comprehend if you can. I hated Inception, I also hate Cloud Atlas. Also isn't tantamount to accordance so much as addition. Forget semantics, that's just a loss of context on your part, combined with being defensive and argumentative. Still with me? I was actually using the rolling eyes smiley to signify that I understand it's a silly bias I have, but one that nonetheless impacted my viewing of a movie that dealt with dreams. Dreams, which I acknowledged as a specific subject that I have researched far more than the average person. Make generalizations at your own peril, but if it's an inaccurate impression of me you want, I won't stop you.
Leonidas: You, what is your profession? Arcadian Soldier: I'm a potter, sir. Leonidas: And you, Arcadian, what is your profession? Arcadian Soldier: I'm a sculptor. Leonidas: And you? Arcadian Soldier: I'm a blacksmith. Leonidas: Spartans! What is your profession? Spartans: Harooh! Harooh! Harooh! Leonidas: See old friend, I brought more soldiers than you did. No arguments here O wise Sir, just a lone soul providing another edge of a incredibly blunt sword you provided. And a big LOL at 'Make generalizations at your own peril' hahahaha, even though you were dead serious this had me in stitches hahahahaha
How astute... Defensive and argumentative because of what I said below. I don't like people who come off as if they are better than others - who come off as if they know everything. The whole entire way you type/come off is offensive/condescending... It's just evident you have an ego problem. But this is about the movie. Perhaps I will make a separate thread about the movie. I should have done that first.
