Legalization Rant

  1. Hello Grasscity. I've been browsing the forums for a while and finally decided to make myself an account. I have decided to share my rant on marijuana's current legal state with the users here. So here it goes.

I've been smoking marijuana for about 2 years now. I haven't had one time that i did not enjoy and the fact that this plant is illegal really irks me. I guess the thing that really hits me the hardest is about 4 years ago I had a trip to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. During this trip the group I was with had the privilege of going into Stephen Harper's personal office, something many people haven't and will not experience in their lifetime. In Stephen Harper's office there is a lot of secret spots, filing cabinets, hell even a television hidden behind a door. to the left of this television is a liquor cabinet. I'm not saying I don't condone drinking, I enjoy drinking myself. But anyways back on track. If liquor kills on average about 2.5 million people a year world wide. As you probably already know, there are no known deaths directly caused by marijuana ever. So how come the members of parliament can condone the drinking of alcohol, and even let it happen in their own personal building?

Yet this harmless plant that can even work wonders when it comes to certain health conditions (more about this to come) is outlawed? Because it makes you lazy and useless to society? I smoke marijuana on a daily basis, and I'm a full time student with a relatively good grade average. And when i am not at school I still work hard at a part-time job. So good grades and still working hard on the side? I don't understand how that makes me "Lazy" and "Useless to Society".

Another statistic commonly tossed around is that the use of marijuana can lead to cancer. Pardon my language, but i call bullshit. Tell me how come countless people recovering from cancer through chemotherapy smoke marijuana and claim that it helps them? In some cases it is even prescribed to patients. Why prescribe a cancer patient something that will surely make it worse? It just doesn't make sense. There are even studies that prove marijuana DOES NOT cause cancer, and in fact concentrated oil from the plant can even cure it (see the documentary "Run From The Cure"). Marijuana has countless medical benefits, and can help with many conditions such as; Attention Defecate Disorder, Glaucoma, Multiple Sclerosis, Arthritis, Chronic Pain, Muscle Spasms, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Epilepsy, Parkinson's Disorder, and even HIV/AIDS, just to name a few. So why is a plant so helpful outlawed?

    Here's some fun facts for you;
    pen caps - 100 deaths/year
    falling out of bed - 450 deaths/year
    vending machines - 13 deaths/year
    roller coasters - 4 deaths/year
I guess the point that I am getting at here is if these 4 common things are proven to cause multiple deaths per year, then how come marijuana, something with no known deaths, is illegal? This really doesn't make sense in my mind. Of all the substances, which kills the most people a year? Tobacco. Tobacco kills on average 6 million people per year, yet remains very legal.

How about addiction? Marijuana is actually one of the least addictive substances available. Even less addictive than coffee. Yeah sure there are plenty of people in treatment for marijuana consumption, but only about 4% are there willingly. Another statistic that leaves me puzzled regarding marijuana's current legal state.

If legalized, regulated, and taxed, marijuana would bring in upwards or 8 billion dollars in tax revenue. not the mention the countless jobs it would create (cultivation, packaging, sales, delivery, etc). Not only is the bud its self good, but the hemp fibers in the plant itself are also very useful, some things that can be made with the plant include; Paper, Clothing, String, Plastic, Jewelry, Animal Bedding, and even Fuel, and that's just getting started. The fibers from the cannabis plant make it the most useful plant in the world. So why diminish our planets natural resources when the plant that can be cultivated can do more than it's part to solve the current environmental crisis?

So I guess I will end off this rant by saying why are we running from the one thing that can solve so many things? I think it's time to cut the bullshit, and legalize marijuana. Feel free to agree or disagree. This is just the opinion of one weed smoker. If you have any criticism or anything to add feel free to share it with me. and keep tokin :smoke:

The "higher ups" very well know all of that, but they also know that the seeds have all the nutrition we need to survive, can make far cheaper fuel, superior quality clothing, and paper without years of waiting and tons of expensive horrifying chemicals, which is very likely the reason it remains illegal. Unfortunately for us, most people that stereotype us don't google weed facts. While it would bring in great revenue, the improbable but "technical possibility" is that they could "potentially" lose billions and billions, which to them evidently outweighs the benefits of legalization.

  3. I think the fight for legalization of canabis is slowly working in the U.S. There are a number of places where you can purchase weed for 'medical' reasons and it's considered likely that it will be in many more states for the same reasons.
In the states where medical marijuana is legal it's commonly known you can gain a medical marijuana card with ease, giving you the freedom to buy it legally.
Ofcourse it's a pain in the arse not just being legal but its a way of legally being able to buy it.
In the UK i really can't see any form of legalization to buy weed.
Canabis is currently a class B drug and the goverment can't say enough bad about it. For them to legalize it would be a complete contradiction of what they've previously said.
I can only hope that with the increase in the US, the UK may eventually adopt similar laws.
