LED vs CFL

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by CloseTheCloset, Mar 3, 2010.

  1. This may be a rhetorical question but will a 90w quad band LED light stomp out cfl's?

  2. Well I did a search on it and found this piece of info:

"Powerful 90W LED grow light can replace standard 300-400W MH/HPS grow light."

This is BS. further down is says:

    "Lumens:3500LM"

This is just laughable. My 400w HPS emits 56 000 Lumens.

I had one of these LED panels and it sucked bigtime. Granted, it was only 15w though, but still one 23w CFL was 10 times better... It was 1300 Lumens so not exactly 10 times better:p

I'm actually wondering what the hell would grow under a panel like this. I can't imagine any plant getting what it needs from this weak light. I now use it for mushies.

I know people can grow with this, but if you want good results you'll have to invest a hell of alot of money in these LED-ufos or something like that. This is some seriously expensive stuff.

PS: one 23w CFL emits something like 1300 Lumens so I would go for that since it's so cheap and easily available. Energy-efficient too.

  3. I just finished 44 days of germinate and veg under a 90W LED. It's my first grow so I have nothing to compare it to but I am very happy so far. The conditions were a bit rough a few times as I learned. We shall see about flowering.

Whoa. That looks great man. I could be wrong ofcourse.
This makes me wonder how your plants would do under a different light source like CFL or HPS.

  5. Thanks. I'm not arguing with or trying to prove anyone wrong, just doing my own thing. I will accept whatever results. That is one 90W UFO from a trusted source with two 100W EQ CFL's added around day 30 due to a breakage of the right plant that took half my veg. I added the CFL's right down in the middle of that one to try and get that plant back up to speed. As you can see, it worked. There is lots of LST in there due to height restrictions.

OP, I would recommend going with a reputable source if you try LED. I used HTG there are others like Pro Source. Stay away from eBay, they are to easy to fake with cheap materials. Go with someone that is putting their reputation on the line. Good luck!

  6. I'm finishing a 150w CFL grow atm; 3x 48w bulbs, 10,000 lumens total, Each bulb about 3500 Lumens

Those LED panels might be using all of their energy to put out specific bandwidths of light for the plant, but its still using twice the Power of one of my CFL's thats producing the same amount of Lumens, Covering a wider range of bandwidths, which I'm sure the plant needsm, and LED panels cant provide unless they're using 20 different LED colors.

I've grown with both LED and CFLS, and I personally prefer CFL, But i'm still not satisfied with either, I will deffiently be upgrading to a 100w HPS for my next grow.

The 100w HPS will put out 10,000+ lumens, for 2/3 the power of my 10,000 lumen CFl rig, or 1/3rd of the power of LED panels putting out 10k lumens (3x panels).

  7. I know, I'm not arguing either. Just sharing information. It's all good.

But what do you mean by 100w EQ CFL? 100w equivalent? that's a 42w?

  8. I guess, I am not home to look. I just know they said equal to 100W. I bought them for their size and shape more than wattage because I literally put them down inside the center of the smaller plant to get it caught up.

We're cool. I just like to mention that I don't argue because every time I type those three magic letters all I get is flak.

  9. Yeah. I use it like that too. I got 3 x 23w CFLs down to get some extra light on my lower buds. It really helps alot...

I would just like to mention that the equivalent is just a sales gimmick and really means that you would have to have 100w of incandecent lights to get the same light intensity. And since we don't grow with incandecents it doesn't mean anything, just that incandecents are way more inefficient.

Happy growing mate, and I'll be checking out your grow. I would really like to see what harvest you'll get with that LED. Peace

  10. Lumens are only what the human eye can pick up, hence its not really an important factor, its how much of the light produced the plant uses and with LED the plant uses more than 2x the light that the ufo would produce vs. a HID

  11. so ur saying the 400$ ufo light is worth it?.. and there is no great heat or blinding light interference... sorry for jumpin in this but now im very curious...

  12. 400$ for a 90w LED UFO? that's not worth it if you ask me (I know you didn't).

Think about it. you can get a 400w HPS for much less and at least get the same result. Yeah LED uses less energy, and lasts longer, but you'll not get the same yeild. You can get a kit that consists of a 400w HPS with reflector and ballast for 115$.

Well, since I have only one grow trying this LED, I don't have that much experience and you don't have to take my word for it. I'm not saying you won't be happy with it, just that I wasn't. It might suit your needs, what do I know...

  13. tis true tis true. thanks for the input! WOOT

high times seems to think its good enough to replace a 400w system. i think for the closet grower a 90w led ufo would be good alternative to a bunch of cfl's of course that just my opinion. here is the high times link High Times > Light and the LED Zeppelin: Will LED’s Sink or Soar in the Growroom?

    *edit*
also 90w led's are not $400 they are around $100-$200 depending on source. even at $200 the cost saving's when it comes compared to 400w HPS think about it. the led will pay for it self after the first grow. just something to think about.

  15. LEDS are way better you use less power their is almost no heat made you can keep the plant right next to the leds and your leaves wont burn Cfls are one of the worst lights to use people only use them because they are cheap its worth to invest in your lighting your plant will be much better

I have just completed a grow box that runs a 90 w ufo ( 20 blue and 70 red) I am very concerned about this set up but we are in the fine tuning stage and i hope to start growing in the next couple of days. I tried to early and killed 3 cuttings very quickly. I have a friend who is helping me but his experience is outdoor. I am limited for power so I am praying I can make this work. any help you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated. I will keep you informed as i go and maybe pictures from time to time.

  17. My light should come in today, I'll let you know how things work out on my end as well, whats your grow box look like? We should work on this experiment together. My plants are about a month old and only 6 inches tall, I think the size of my pots, the soil and the lighting are severely stunting their growth even though im running about 300-400 watts of cfl's

  18. My buddy says switch your pots first....they will only grow as big as the pot will let them...(trust me this guy is good.....)

  20. umm idk if anyone wrote this but i was just reading the few posts above but ummm... lumens are light that we see with our visual eyes. nothing to do with how much the plant uses. the study goes that a 90w led the plant will use More of the efficient lighting then a 400w hps ... the plant uses the rays of the spectrum from the led more then they would use the bright hps or hid or what ever u wanna use... lumens is for eyes... not for plants.... fyi
