It is my experience that leafy buds result from the growing of particular strains that do not fully acclimate to the environment or it's the plant's way of surviving to maturity. Part of the reason could be lack of sunlight for the buds to fully develop: Some strains can produce nice tight buds with 8 - 10 hours of light, while other strains requiring 12 hours or more. This year for example I grew several different strains, alll receive the same amount of light. Some strains produced nice tight buds that you can hardly squish, some were partially leafy, and a few others that were airy or leafy. Even phenos of the same strain had variation. When growing outside you have to deal with the laws of nature - some plants adapt well, while others struggle to finish their purpose in life. In short, sunlight and genetics play a huge role in determining bud density. Growing indoors will give you an advantage and I'm sure you won't have to deal with leafy buds again. Get your grinder ready.
