Leaf drop and petiole collapse

Discussion in 'Sick Plants and Problems' started by Johny Apple DWC, Dec 28, 2010.

  1. All flowering plants are experiencing the same problems. The petioles are collapsing and the leaves are dropping. Some look perfectly healthy and others are dry and curled. New growth tips appear burned on lower branches. I'm running a deep water culture system. I've thought it could be anything from fungus, to bugs, to a deficiency , but just can't seem to hit this one on the head. Also as of recently in one of my tubs I get a big ph drop after about 4 days of changing the solution. From like 5.8 to 3.8 in 24 hours. Over all the plants seem to make it from a to b, but I feel like I'm losing a lot of yield to this problem. I thought it might have been a fungus because the leaf tips looked almost black at the bottom of the plants. I'm using gh nutes and many other additives at different stages. Anyways, any thoughts are appreciated, and I'm happy to rep ya if it's helpful. I can get some pics, but not till after my Co2 cycle finishes for the day. Thanks guys.

  2. Next time lolipop for air flow and get more air moving at the base of the plants. Not sure how to stop the problem but Im sure air flow is your problem by the sounds of it.

  3. sounds like you have root rot or are drasticly over feeding.

  4. O.k heres a few pics of the leaves. The fourth pic shows the clear spots on the leaves I've asked about before. I can't say for sure, but they seem to start as clear, like super glue spots, and turn brown and dry eventually. Any thoughts on this would be helpful as well. What are the clear spots ?

  5. Anyone at all ? Thoughts on any of these problems ? I'm really stuck on this one. I've tried feeding more, tried feeding less. I tried flushing and changing the res. I sprayed with a fungicide, cut the lower branches off.
It has been hot in there lately running the Co2 like 88 - 92 peak after the co2 stops for the day. Will extreme heat or large temp changes like 20 degrees difference cause leaf drop ?
I'm more curious about the clear leaf spots than anything though. I haven't seen any bugs, and I don't think I'm overferting. I'm only at 300 ppm max in my grow area and 600 max in the flower room.

  6. Ttempatures over 85 are never good. having a night time and daytime tempature change is bad especially if it is over 20 degrees, try to keep them roughly 10 degrees from eachother. if your room is 80+ degrees i bet your dwc res is over 70 degrees. water temps over 70 increase your likely hood of root rot drasticly. usually rapidly droping ph is a sign that root rot has set in. check your roots for rot and take care of the problem asap. waiting will only make it worse.
as far as the droping leafs. im assuming the top growth looks alright and the lower growth is where you got those leafs for the pictures. they are droping because the plant is under fed. the plant move the food from the lower leafs to feet the upper leafs. im not sure what nute line you are using but you should be upto atleast 80% of the manufactures recomendation during flowering if you have hid light. maybe 60% under cfl. this is a minimum. if you keep droping leafs it means u are under feeding the plants. you still need to get those tempatures down. either install a ac or get a exaust fan. no point in having a sealled room w/ co2 if your temps are way out of wack. you would be better of venting the room. it is winter you shouldnt have any trouble keeping your temps down. i guess you could be living below the equater but i dfont know. anyways having a good enviroment meaning good temp and humidity will be better for your plants than co2. if you have to start exahusting to lower the temps do it. give up the co2 untill you can afford to buy a ac that can cool the room properly. it takes about 3800 btus of ac to cool one 1k light to the tempature of the room. more to cool the room itself.

  7. Checking out your grow there, nice set up. I had thought about doing something like that, hows the maintenance ? Anyhow I'm sure your right about all you've said, I'm a little lazier than I ought to be sometimes. So what ppms were you running in dwc versus stage and size of plant ? I grow two big plants, scrog style in a 27 gallon tote with only about 12 gal of ro water in it. I go by what the tds tells me when I feed and when I try and feed more my ppms rise 70 to 100 everyday. I figure the nutes are there but the plant won't take em with mesed up roots. I don't know, thoughts ?

i got three reses going so that makes for a bit of time. but otherwise the training is minimal the plant kinda growinto the screen anyways. you got to keep pulling branches and leafs away to keep them from burning. it would be a lot easier if i could walk around it or atleast had acces to two sides.

So what ppms were you running in dwc versus stage and size of plant ?
im at 1400 for the olser plants and 1200 for the younger ones. my ppms drop daily in both but i wont raise them cause i get a bit more tip burn than i want.

I figure the nutes are there but the plant won't take em with mesed up roots. I don't know, thoughts ? probably true. the tds reasing might be high because of the dead root material in the res. it might be giving you a false reading. plus you might be evaporationg water quicker than you want. the evaporation causes higher reading too. take care of the root rot. it will be a lot simpler once its dead
