Lava Rocks as medium

  1. So I have another thread in beginners that mentions this but figured this question would be better fit here. I have started up an amnesia Haze for a 5 gallon dwc system and was planning on using lava rock as my medium.

Previously I used vermiculite/perlite but it was such a mess because it just kept falling through the net pots into the reservoir. I've been reading about lava rocks, seems people use it as either the full rocks successfully while others have issues with how jagged the rocks are and cutting the root system.

Does anyone here have experience using red lava rocks as their medium? Right now it's just a sprouting with whole lava rocks and a small amount of perlite on top. I'm debating if once I transplant her if I should use like river stones on the bottom to kind of block some of the holes and crush the lava rock to fill the rest of the pot to not work about the weird, jagged textures.
