I am looking for a good information compilation on ketogenic diet and ketosis in general. For me personally, I am not looking to lose weight, I actually would like to gain 10-15lbs. I am interested in a ketogenic diet for possible health benefits. Edit - for those completely unfamiliar with ketogenic/ketosis, I will give a brief summary. The idea is, your body can operate 'better' utilizing fats for the fuel source instead of carb/sugar/glucose. 1g fat can theoretically produce 9kcal of energy, whereas protein and carbohydrates generate 4kcal per gram. When your body starts burning fat for energy, it starts producing ketones as well, thus you are entering ketosis. Eating a high fat, moderate protein and low carb diet can put your body in a state of ketosis, as can fasting!
Thus far I have been unable to gain weight, but here are the things I have been trying. Eating lots of avocado, eggs, flax/chia mix, coconut oil, olive oil, butter, sour cream, sunflower seeds, oysters, sardines, pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashews, walnuts, garbanzo beans, cocoa/ home made chocolate and I have been cooking veggies in copious oil, oh and cheese to a lesser extent. It is very difficult for me to get enough calories even with such extreme bias for fatty foods. I need no less than 3500 calories just to break even. So, what other foods do you keto peeps eat to diversify your diet and get enough calories? I decided to try keto because I consumed way too many carbs, particularly sugars, so I am trying to change my gut microbiome to prefer fats to simple sugars.
Based on the information provided, perhaps you need to ask yourself the following questions: Have you been eating enough protein (and calories in general)? Have you been testing your ketone and blood glucose levels to check you are in ketosis? What type of exercise are you doing? Are you obtaining enough of all the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs to function efficiently? Your muscles and liver will store glycogen and use this as your body's energy source during anaerobic exercise while in a state of ketosis. We have substantial reserves, however your exercise regime may not be complementing your intake of nutrition. When in rigourous training, it is possible to increase your carb intake marginally and remain in ketosis.
some things to ponder What kind of body sonotype are you-ecto, endo or mesomorphh? Sounds like an ectomorph, is your metabolism very fast? Can you eat a lot and get hungry a few hours later? What is your physical activity level during the day? Do you do more cardio workouts or strength training? What is your weight gain goal and time frame? I don't understand cutting carbs completely as there are really healthy, tasty low glycemic options that provide slow burning energy during the day like sweet potatoes, oatmeal, brown rice. Not sure if you eat wheat flour based products but there are alternatives like also sorghum powder, spelt, corn, etc. I like the sounds of the high fat in your diet, because as an ectomorph wanting to gain weight, fats are crucial. I didn't eat enough and learned that way. In college I lifted weights 4 days or so a week and ate every 2-3 hours and gained weight, strength and muscle mass slowly over time. Not much cardio, lots of core work. It was a ton of food, though brown rice, broccoli, chicken/fish, sometimes eating when I didn't feel like it at all. It's a rough road but worth it
Eat more steak. Joe Rogan has multiple podcasts, where they go pretty deep on all aspects of ketogenic diet. Dr. Rhonda Parick and Dom D'Agostino ... But there are also some interesting arguments from the other side of the spectrum from Dr. Andy Galpin
Steak is for Carnivores.. Lions and shit not Humans. Our design is 98% closer to an ape than anything else.
Honestly it's a pretty well known fact that a ketogenic diet is one where it takes a long time to break down your food into energy for your muscles, as opposed to carbs which happens much quicker. I mention this because OP is saying 3500 calories a day just to break even so there must be some sort of exercise involved here. Furthermore, some people's bodies just do not perform as well while in ketosis as compared to a carb diet. For me personally, I have been keto and I enjoyed the energy throughout the day but my workouts were a pain in the ass, much more so than usual. As per foods for keto, I was actually on this program with my girlfriend at the time where we paid an UNGODLY sum of money for foods that would help us stay in keto. Seriously like 600 a month just for the snack portions. This was by far the biggest draw back; it costs money to keep this diet and not get bored of it. Personally, my weight yo-yos like crazy. I went into the joint at 155, came out at 277. My natural weight with a healthy diet and moderate exercise is around 215. I used to monitor everything I ate but I slowly moved away from it because it was taking up too much of my time. Nowadays I just do high ratios of healthy proteins and raw/steamed vegetables to low levels of carbs and I don't even pay attention to fats. There is no shortage of healthy fat in my diet. I'm a label reader too and everything that goes into my shopping cart gets checked over. You were pretty thorough with the healthy fat list. This may sound super simple - have you considered adding peanut butter to damn near everything you eat? People have been eating meat for thousands of years. Now because of some meme, everyone has to be like a monkey?... Maybe we should also live in the jungle because we're not well adapted to the artificial lights and office jobs. Eat whatever you want, no need to tell others how to live their lives.
Total nonsense, humans are omnivores. We have molars for crushing, but we also have sharp canines for tearing meat as well as thin straight front teeth for chopping. In short, we are well equipped to handle a diverse diet of meat, grains as well as vegetables and fruits. And there is zero evidence that abstaining from meat has any health benefits.
Oh yess humans are most definitely extremely adapting species, i just believe by all those ascpects and especially how we are build on the inside leads more and shows more promising results to a plant-based lifestyle than omnivorous.
A big factor with the meat is what the animal is fed throughout its life. Grass fed is more expensive but the difference is notable, from the taste to the way you feel. A good alternative to this is to hunt something. My buddy has his status card, meaning if he wants to go into the bush, he can do so and hunt at anytime of the year, without reprimand. Fortunately for me, meat procured this way is illegal to sell so instead most just give away what they don't need. Sent from my SM-J120W using Grasscity Forum mobile app
