K9 and reasonable cause?

Discussion in 'Apprentice Marijuana Consumption' started by blazers4005, Mar 17, 2010.

  1. I once heard that a cop that has pulled you over cannot call in a k9 unit to smell your car. But if the cop that pulled you over is a k9 unit then he can bring the k9 out and use it for reasonable cause if it smells anything.

    Any truth to this?

  2. i wish i knew but even if this was true i seriously doubt it would stop the cops from calling in a K9 to sniff your shit out

  3. A cop has to have probable cause to call a k-9 unit to sniff you car.

  4. a cop can make up shit and say he smells it even if he doesnt, the police can do whatevers the fuck they want

  5. + Rep for saying the most true thing I heard all day.

  6. Yeah, it's sad but true. Most cops DGAF.

  7. Cops can do whatever they want. The sooner everybody realizes this, the better

  8. That's why you fight back.

  9. thats why you stay out of their way

  10. It's not a "legal" rule on when a K9 unit can be called; but more of a procedure or process. They do not want to waste money or disturb a K9 unit for constant cry wolf scenarios. Just put some coffee and steak in your car if you get pulled by a k9 unit... coffee to cover the smell of your weed and steak to feed the dog (oh officer I don't know why you pulled me over; but little Tin-Tin looks like he needs a steak (coated in PB). :)

  11. As far as I'm aware, they're perfectly free to call in a K-9 to sniff for any reason they want, so long as they don't detain you for longer than is necessary to complete the original stop.

  12. Pretty sure they can call in a k9 unit if they feel like it but usually they won't bother because they're lazy ass cops. Also pretty sure they can't hold you for an excessive period amount of time if your just being stopped for a ticket or something

  13. This..

  14. yah, the time consuming part is the loop hole kind of. Because if it takes awhile to get in they have to let you go without pressing formal charges. Its amendment 5 I think.

  15. I wouldn't say it's really a loop-hole, it just depends on how fast they can get a K-9 there.
Once they pull you over, they can hold you as long as it takes for them to talk to you, get your info, run your info, write a citation, etc. If they can get a K-9 there in that amount of time, then they can have it walk around your car without any cause.

I've been given the whole "if you don't consent to a search I'll call in a K-9" talk before, though, and there are definitely times when they are just bluffing to get you to consent.

  16. yes i know this first hand
