That's because it's not that strange. Most married people I know have a 3-4 year gap. It's only strange for college kids to date highschool kids because of the difference in experience and perspective.

Well they'd have to really hate you to attempt to get you arrested for having consensual sex with a minor, cause that's a pretty serious charge. However, the possibility is still there. I personally would never do such a thing if it was truly consensual, but some people are assholes, so you never know. If you were to gain approval of the parents they would surely never do that, especially if the daughter is only a year younger or two.
