Just got some compost...

  1. Hey!

So I nabbed some great organic compost at our Farmer's Market today ($1/pound). What do you think the best use of it would be if I'm not looking to build a soil? I just did an ACT with some great EWCs. I'm thinking do another of those or just top-dress.

    Thanks for the advice!

I'd store it in a tote and keep tossing in alfalfa and kelp here and there, build up hormones and micros :). Water with ACT and EM-1, maybe even ceramincs :p, make it AWESOME compost for your next soil batch or a top dress. I do exactly this and mix an equal portion EWC in the tote, pull out 2 cups for quality ACT ;). Its all a cycle...

If you don't wanna buy EM-1, you could just make some lacto bacilus. Doesn't take longer than 10 days, you can make enough in one run to last years. Stuffs so active I have trouble popping the lid off from built up pressure

  3. Top dress a solid inch, inch and a half with it.

  4. Kesey,

Thanks for the input but that doesn't quite work with my setup. First, I'm running no-till (should have mentioned that before) so pretty much my only two options are top-dress or tea. And second, the steps you described seem a bit anti-LIFTA for a completed compost. Then again, this is ky first time using a compost that isn't EWCs :) Are those common/necessary steps for boosting a compost's usefulness?

    Jerry,

Thanks! I did that today right before watering. How often do you topdress? As it becomes assimilated into the soil?

Sounds about right to me - you'll know when to do it again.

I find that between to dressings and thicker teas, these put back what's being used just fine.
